Thetopofthefluesystemshouldbetallenoughtobeabovetheairturbulencecausedwhenwind
blowsagainstthehouseanditsroof.
Theflueexitshallbelocatedoutsidethebuildinginwhichtheapplianceisinstalledsothat:
a) Thefluepipeshallextendnotless
than4.6mabovethetopofthefloorprotector;
b) Theminimumheightofthefluesystemwithin 3m distancefromthehighestpoint ofthe
roofshallbe600mmabovethatpoint;
c) Theminimumheightofthefluesystemfurtherthan3mfromthe
highestpointoftheroof
shallbe1000mmaboveroofpenetration;
d) Nopartofanybuildingliesinoraboveacirculararea describedbyahorizontalradiusof3
maboutthefluesystemexit.
8.4 THERELATIONSHIPBETWEENTHEFLUESYSTEMANDTHEHOUSE
Becausethefluesystemistheenginethatdrivesthewoodheatingsystem,itmusthavetheright
characteristics.Thesignsofbadsystemdesignarecolddowndraughtwhenthereisnofireinthe
wood fire, slow kindling of new fires, and smoke rollout when the door is opened for loading.
Therearetwoguidelinestofollow.First,thefluesystemshouldbeinstalledupthroughtheheated
spaceofthehouse,notoutandupanoutsidewall.Second,thefluesystemshouldpenetratethe
topofthebuildingatornearthehighestheatedspace.
8.4.1 WHYINSIDEFLUESYSTEMSAREPREFERRED
Fluesystemsthatrisestraightupfromthewoodfirefluecollarprovidethebestperformance.Flue
systemsthatriseinsidethewarmspaceofthehousetendtoprovideasmallamountofdrafteven
whenthereisnofireburning.Thismeansthatwhenyoulightafire,theinitialsmokegoesupthe
fluesystemandstrongdraft builds quickly asthefluesystemwarmsup. Flue systems thatexita
housewallandrunupoutsidecancauseproblems.
GoodSystemDesign
Insidefluesystemsarepreferredbecause
evenwhennofireisburning,thereis
normallyupwardflowinthesystem.
InferiorSystemDesign
Outsidefluesystemsareaproblembecausewhen
nofireburnstheywillgointocolddowndraughtif
thewoodfireisinstalledlow
inthehouse.
