3.2.1 WHATISGOODFIREWOOD?
Goodfirewood has been cut tothe correct lengthforthewood fire, split to a rangeof sizes and
stackedintheopenuntilitsmoisturecontentisreducedto15to20percent.
3.2.2 TREESPECIES
The tree species the firewood is produced
from is less important than its moisture content. The
maindifferenceinfirewoodfromvarioustreespeciesisthedensityofthewood.Hardwoodssuch
asgums,Manukaorironbarkaredenserthansoftwoods.Hardwoodwillproducelong‐lastingcoal
bedscombinedtomoreheatandlongerburncycles.
Old,leakycastironwoodfireswouldn’t holdafireovernightunlesstheywerefedlargepiecesof
hardwood. That is no longer true. You can succ essfully heat your home by using less wood and
givetheforestabreakatthesametime.
3.2.3 LOGLENGTH
Logsshouldbecut
about25mm(1”)shorterthanthefireboxsotheyfitineasily.Piecesthatare
slightly too long makeloading the woodfire very difficult. The mostcommon standard length of
firewoodis400mm(16”).
