Example Use Case (VPN)
A. General
(1)AcommonuseofSatcomistoallowequipmentbasedonthegroundtointerrogateequipment
ontheUAV,forexampletopullpositiondatafromtheflight controller, refer to Figure 11.One
way of achieving thisistocreateaVirtualPrivateNetwork(VPN)fromtheUAVtotheground
equipment. Some advantagesofthisapproachare:
–Whensetupcorrectly,theVPNcanappearasatransparent‘wire’allowingseamless
connectionsbetweenthegroundandair.
–IftheVPNclientissetupontheairside,theSatcomterminaldoesnotneedastaticIP
address,DynamicDNSorsimilar.
–TheVPNprovidesend-to-endencryptionunderyourcontrol.
–Theairsideroutercanbeconfigured toautomaticallyestablishtheSatcomconnection
onpowerup.
–Dependingonthechoiceofrouter,itcanremovetheneedforaseparateEthernetswitch.
