3.4. Connecting the Cables
3.4.1. WiringtheCymbal
OncetheCymbalismounted,youarereadytowirethedevice.Properwiring,groundingand
shieldingareessentialforensuringsafe,immuneandoptimalservoperformanceofthe
Cymbal.
Caution:Followtheseinstructionstoensuresafeandproperwiring:
• Usetwistedpairshieldedcablesforcontrol,feedbackandcommunicationconnections.For
bestresults,thecableshouldhaveanaluminumfoilshieldcoveredbycopperbraid,and
shouldcontainadrainwire.
Thedrainwireisanon‐insulatedwirethatisincontactwithpartsofthecable,usually
theshield.Itisusedtoterminatetheshieldandasagroundingconnection.
• Theimpedanceofthewiremustbeaslowaspossible.Thesizeofthewiremustbethicker
thanactuallyrequiredbythecarryingcurrent.A24,26or28AWGwireforcontroland
feedbackcablesissatisfactoryalthough24AWGisrecommended.
• Useshieldedwiresformotorconnectionsaswell.Ifthewiresarelong,ensurethatthe
capacitancebetweenthewiresisnottoohigh:C<30nFissatisfactoryformost
applications.
• Keepallwiresandcablesasshortaspossible.
• Keepthemotorwiresasfarawayaspossiblefromthefeedback,controland
communicationcables.
• Ensurethatinnormaloperatingconditions,theshieldedwiresanddraincarrynocurrent.
Theonlytimetheseconductorscarrycurrentisunderabnormalconditions,whenelectrical
equipmenthasbecomeapotentialshockorfirehazardwhileconductingexternalEMI
interferencesdirectlytogr ound,inordertopreventthemfromaffectingthedrive.Failing
tomeetthisrequirem entcanresultindrive/controller/hostfailure.
• Aftercompletingthewiring,carefullyinspectallwirestoensuretightness,goodsolder
jointsandgeneralsafety.
