Specifications
The AK-920 is an electronic stapling machine kit that you put togeth-
er. The kit is mechanically assembled by the user with no soldering
required.
In addition to the experience of building the unit, there is also an
overview of its operation, a block diagram, an electronic road map
showing the electrical circuits, and a troubleshooting section in case
of problems.
Recommended for ages 10 and up. It takes about 2 hours to build.
YOU WILL NEED:
• Screwdriver, phillips type, medium size

WORDS YOU SHOULD KNOW
TROUBLESHOOTING
1. How to avoid jams: Do not try to staple more than 14 sheets of
16 lb. bond paper (or 10 sheets of 20 lb. bond paper). Make sure
the stapler completes its cycle before removing paper from the
staple banger. Use quality alkaline batteries.
2. If no staples come out: Check that there are staples in the unit.
Also, if there are more than 105 staples (about a 2 inch strip) in
the unit then the long spring may get stuck, so make sure there is
at least 0.5 inch of open space in the staple tray.
3. As the batteries get weak: As the batteries get weak through
use the stapler may operate more slowly and may jam more often.
Replace the batteries.
4. Nothing happens when paper is inserted: The paper must trig-
ger the activator switch (which sticks up through the staple plate),
check that this is happening. Also check that the batteries are
installed correctly.
5. Some of the wires break off. Solder them if you have the nec-
essary tools and know how to do it.
If you need additional assistance, contact Elenco.

HOW IT WORKS
Also refer to the Block Diagram and the Electronic Road Map.
When paper is inserted into the unit the activator switch is triggered.
This switch controls transistors (electronic switches) on the circuit
board, which turn on the motor. The motor uses the electrical ener-
gy from the batteries to spin the small gear.
The small gear has 12 “teeth”. These interlock with 50 teeth on the
transfer gear, so spinning the small gear will also spin the transfer
gear. The transfer gear also has 12 teeth which interlock with 2 small
gears on the right side sub-assembly, which interlock with teeth on
the right side wheel.
The result of all these gears is that by the motor spinning the small
gear, the right side wheel will spin. But the turning speed will be dif-
ferent since the teeth ratios are different. If one gear has more teeth
than another then it will turn with less speed but with greater force.
Because of the teeth ratios, the small motor gear will spin 130 times
faster than the right side wheel but the wheel will spin with 130 times
as much force. This allows a small motor to be used.
The right side wheel is linked to the staple banging sub-assembly.
As the right wheel turns, the staple banger will push a staple from
the staple holder into the paper. The gears and wheel continue to
spin until the staple banger returns to its starting position, at which
time the “motor done sensor” (the switch which snaps into the right
side) is triggered. This sensor controls transistors on the circuit
board, which turn off the motor. The long spring advances the next
staple into position.
When the reload button is pressed, the staple tray is released so
that more staples may be added. If the stapler is currently jammed,
the motor will also be turned on but will spin in reverse. This will
return the staple banger to its starting position, and allow you to
remove the problem staples.

HOW TO USE IT
1. Load batteries: Detach the battery
cover and load 4 “AA” alkaline bat-
teries. Be sure the “+” and “-” mark-
ings on the batteries match those in
the battery case. Do not mix old and
new batteries. This unit can also use
an AC adapter (6V 600mA).
SPECIFICATIONS:
Staple type: Standard
Capacity: Up to 14 sheets of 16 lb. bond paper; 10
sheets of 20 lb bond
Power Supply: 4 “AA” alkaline batteries; accepts AC adapter
6V 600mA
Loading Capacity: Up to 105 staples (about a 2 inch strip)
4. How to clear jams: If your stapler
jams, press the reload button at
the top of the unit to release the
staple tray. Pull the tray out and
remove the problem staples. Push
the staple tray back gently until it
clicks into place.
See the Troubleshooting section if you have any problems.
3. Stapler operation: To activate
the stapler, simply insert paper
into the opening at the front of
the unit. The documents will
be stapled automatically. Your
stapler is designed to fasten
up to 14 sheets of 16 lb. bond
paper or up to 10 sheets of 20
lb. bond paper. Trying to sta-
ple more sheets at one time
may cause jams.
2. Loading staples: Press the
reloader button on the top of
the stapler. The staple tray
will be released. Pull it out
and load up to 105 standard
staples (about a 2 inch
strip). (WARNING: there
must be at least 0.5” of
open space in the staple
tray or the stapler may jam.)
Push the staple tray back
gently until it clicks into
place.
