Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 126 Managing color Color print options Color print options control the color management applied to a print job. The color print options in the Color Management window of Command WorkStation show the default color print settings for the Fiery Server. A default color print setting is applied if the color print setting has not otherwise been specified for the job.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 127 The CMYK/Grayscale Source profile setting you specify depends on the CMYK profile or press standard for which the CMYK data was separated. This option affects CMYK data only. • For images that were separated using a custom separation (such as a separation produced with an ICC profile), select the corresponding profile on the Fiery Server with the CMYK/Grayscale Source setting.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 128 • ECI-RGB - The European Color Initiative (ECI) recommended space for use as an RGB working color space and color data exchange format for ad agencies, publishers, reproduction, and printing houses. • Fiery RGB - An EFI-defined color space recommended for users of office applications. This color space is similar to EFIRGB but is larger and can provide a more desirable blue output.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 129 CMYK/Grayscale Processing Method The CMYK Processing Method option allows you to define the CMYK-to-CMYK conversion method for the CMYK data in a print job. • Pure Primaries - If your Fiery Server supports this setting, it outputs the primary colors in a job (C only, M only, or Y only) as primary colors, using only a single colorant. The result is pure-looking primary colors, with minimal banding in gradients. Pure Primaries compromises overall color accuracy.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 130 RGB/Lab Rendering Intent The RGB/Lab Rendering Intent option specifies a rendering intent for RGB/Lab-to-CMYK color conversion. This conversion can be optimized for the type of color image being printed. To control the appearance of images, such as prints from office applications or RGB photographs from Adobe Photoshop, select the appropriate rendering intent.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 131 Separate RGB/Lab to CMYK Source The Separate RGB/Lab to CMYK Source option determines how RGB colors (as well as Lab and XYZ colors) are converted to CMYK. This option defines the color spaces that are used by the Fiery Server to separate the RGB data into CMYK values.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 132 • If Separate RGB/Lab to CMYK Source is turned on, Gray (RGB) is turned off. Likewise, if Gray (RGB) is turned on, you cannot turn on Separate RGB/Lab to CMYK Source. • If Black Text and Graphics is set to Pure Black On or Rich Black On, it takes precedence over Gray (RGB) and Gray (CMYK) for 100% black text and graphics. • If a gray is specified as a spot color, Gray (RGB) and Gray (CMYK) do not affect that gray.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 133 An example of how you might use this setting is a page that contains black text on a light blue background. The background blue is CMYK=40%, 30%, 0%, 0%. The black text is CMYK=0%, 0%, 0%, 100%. • With Black Overprint set to Text or Text/Graphics, the final text or graphic portions of the page are overprinted, or combined with the underlying color.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 134 • An output profile describes the color characteristics of the copier/printer when printing to a specific media type. An output profile is associated with a calibration that describes the expected color output densities of the copier/ printer. The output profile and its associated calibration are applied to all color data in a print job. • A device link profile describes the conversion from a specific source color space to an output color space.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 135 Import profiles You can import a source profile (RGB or CMYK), an output profile, or a device link profile to the Fiery Server. Before you begin Note: On Windows, a profile must have a file name extension of .icc or .icm to be selectable for importing. On Mac OS, a profile must have a file type of “profile.” 1 In Device Center, click the Resources tab, click Profiles and then click Import. 2 Select a folder in the Location list.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 136 Export profiles You can export a profile from the Fiery Server as a backup measure or to use the profile with an ICC-aware application such as Adobe Photoshop. 1 In Device Center, click the Resources tab, and then click Profiles. 2 Select the profile and click Export. 3 Browse to the desired location on your computer and click Choose (Mac OS) or OK (Windows) to save the profile.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 137 Delete profiles You can delete profiles that are no longer needed. Deleting profiles also helps to free up disk space on the Fiery Server. You cannot delete locked profiles. 1 In Device Center, click the Resources tab, click Profiles, and select the profile. 2 Click Settings, set Label in Driver to Unassigned, and then click OK. Note: Label in Driver is not available for models of Fiery Server. If this option does not appear, skip this step.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 138 In Fiery Profile Editor (part of Fiery Color Profiler Suite), you can edit the color data that define the gamut of an output profile . Edit profiles in Color Editor With Color Editor, you can adjust features such as brightness, CMYK density curves, target densities and gray balance (for output profiles), and paper simulation (for CMYK source profiles). Edits made with Color Editor are for printing with the Fiery Server only.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 139 Edit profiles in Fiery Profile Editor If Fiery Color Profiler Suite is installed on your computer, you can use Fiery Profile Editor to edit an output profile. With Profile Editor, you can adjust global color features such as rendering intent and CMYK density curves, as well as adjust specific hues, colors, or even a specific data point in the profile gamut. 1 In Device Center, click the Resources tab and then click Profiles.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 140 Adjust the gray balance of a profile The AutoGray feature allows you to adjust the gray balance of output profiles. Gray balance refers to the quality of neutral gray tones in a profile. In many cases, gray tones may contain a bluish or reddish color cast. AutoGray helps shift these tones back toward neutral gray. Before you begin If you are satisfied with the gray balance of the copier/printer, you do not need to use AutoGray.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 141 You can calibrate the Fiery Server using different measurement methods. To find out which methods are supported for your Fiery Server, see Color Printing, which is part of the user documentation set. If the Fiery Server supports multiple calibrations, you can perform the calibration procedure for each one, using the appropriate paper type in each case. In this case, the Fiery Server stores different measurement data for each calibration.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 142 Some models of Fiery Server support preparation of the scanner even if the grayscale strip is missing. In this case, the Fiery Server uses the measurements from the previous calibration or, if the Fiery Server has never been calibrated, a default set of measurements. However, for best results, use the grayscale strip. Scanner preparation is optional.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 143 11 Click Continue to complete scanner preparation. Next steps The next step is to calibrate the Fiery Server. Calibrate the Fiery server You perform ColorCal calibration using the grayscale strip and the ColorCal measurement page. Before you begin For this procedure, you must have just printed the ColorCal measurement page in Calibrator and, optionally, prepared the scanner. 1 In Calibrator, under Get Measurements, click Measure.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 144 8 Place the ES-1000 in the calibration cradle. White point calibration is used to calibrate the spectrophotometer and compensate for gradual drifts in the instrument. Make sure the sample aperture is in full contact with the white tile on the calibration cradle. If you do not place it correctly in the calibration cradle, the spectrophotometer does not return accurate measurements.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 145 4 Under Generate Measurement Page, click Print. 5 Select appropriate options for your measurement instrument and click Print to print the measurement page. Sorted patches are printed on the page in order of hue and saturation levels. Randomized patches are printed in random order. Randomized patches can help to compensate for density inconsistencies on different areas of the page.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 146 2 In Calibrator, select or clear Apply to All Calibration Sets. • Selecting this option affects the calibration data for all calibration sets and therefore the output from all output profiles will also change. Be sure that this option is appropriate for all output profiles. For best results, each type of media should have its own calibration data.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 147 Delete custom calibration sets When you delete a custom calibration set, the output profile associated with it is not deleted. The profile is automatically associated with another calibration set. 1 In Calibrator, under Calibration Set, click the list and select Manage. 2 Select the calibration set, click Delete, and then click OK.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 148 Calibration for black-and-white printing Some of the calibration features that are related to color are not available for black-and-white printing. With a single colorant, calibration can be simpler. For black-and-white printing: • Output profiles and calibration settings are not selectable. • You cannot view calibration measurements (curves) or print a test page. • You cannot export or import measurement data. You cannot import the calibration target.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 149 Print a calibration page When you print a calibration page, first specify the calibration setting (color printers), paper source, and measurement method. • For color printers, if the calibration setting that you want is not selectable, it is probably because you started calibration for a selected job. When you start calibration for a specific job, only the calibration setting that is used to print the job is shown.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 150 Calibrate the spectrophotometer Calibrate the spectrophotometer to prepare it for measuring the calibration page. Before you begin Make sure that both the white tile on the cradle and the instrument aperture are clean. If the white tile has a cover, make sure that the cover is open. White point calibration is used to compensate for gradual drifts in the spectrophotometer.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 151 Note: A measurement instrument can provide more accurate calibration than ColorCal can. Use a measurement instrument, such as a spectrophotometer, if one is available. ColorCal measurement consists of these tasks: • Prepare the scanner for ColorCal. • Measure the calibration page using the scanner. • View and save the measurements.
Fiery Command WorkStation Managing color 152 3 Place the ColorCal Calibration page face down over the gray scale strip. Make sure that the patches on the gray scale strip do not overlap the color patches on the ColorCal Calibration page. 4 Close the platen glass cover, being careful not to move the gray scale strip and ColorCal Calibration page. 5 Click Continue to start the ColorCal measurement. 6 When the measurement is complete, click OK to view the measurement results.
