TheESTeemHor i zonusesstandardEthernetRapidSpanningTreeProtocol(RSTP)todeterminetheradioroutingstructureofthe
wirelessnetwork.TheprimarypurposeofRSTPistomakesurethat“networkloops”arenotcreated.Anetworkloopishaving
twocommunicationpathstothesa
medestinationwheretheremotedevicewouldreceivethesamedatamultipletimes.Ifthere
werenowaytocontrolthedataflow , thisdat awouldbeconstantlypassedaroundthisloopcausinga“packetstorm”thatwoul d
shutdowntheentirenetwork.TheSpanningTreeProtocolwillblockallth
eseredundantlinks.
TheRSTPoperationbeginsbydeterminingwhichEthernetdeviceonthenetworkwillbetheRootBridge.AllEthernetnetworks
haveaRootBridgethatisselectedbythelowestMACaddress.AllpathlengthsareevaluatedagainstthisRootBridgedeviceto
determineroutingandwhichpathswi
llbeblocked.OnawiredEthernetnetwork,thelocationoftheRootBridgeisnotreally
important,butinawirelessnetwork selectionoftheRootBridgeiscriticaltothewirelessnetworkrouting.Let’suseoneofthe
