UsingTheRS‐232DataPort
TheESTeemHo r izonhasaserialdataportthatcanprovideRS‐232communicationbetweentwoormoreserialdevicesusingthe
wirelessbroadbandlink.TheserialdataisencapsulatedandtransferredasastandardEthernetpacketoveranoperatingHorizon
wirelessEthernetsystem.TheconfigurationforaserialHorizonnetworkwil
lbethesameasanEthernetoraserial(RS‐232)based
communicationnetwork.
Theserialinterfaceoptioncanbeusedtolinktwoormoreserialdevicesinaneworexistingsystem.Theserialdatahasverylittle
impactonthenetworkbandwidthandwillallowforbothEthernetandser
ialapplicationssimultaneously.Apossibleapplication
wouldbeinstallationoftheHorizoninanexistingserialbasednetworkthatwaslookingforfutureupgradetoanEthernetbased
system.Anotherwouldbeusingthehigh‐bandwidthEthernetconnectionstoprovidealinktoremotevideohardwarewhileal
so
providingaseriallink totheexistingPLCinaSCADAtypeapplication.
SerialConne ctions
TheRJ‐45serialdataportisthefar‐leftportonthefaceofthe
Horizon (Figure 4).Using the ESTeem AA0621.1 interface
cable, the Horizon can be connected to a standard DTE‐
device(PC)withamale9‐pinSub‐Dconnector.Thecomplete
cable configuration is available in Appendix C – In
terface

ConfigurationoftheserialportisdoneinAdvanced>SerialPortSettings.SelectSerialPortSettings>RS‐232andpresstheNext
button,theSerialPortSet upscreen(Figure5)willbedisplayed.EachsectionintheSerialPortSetupscreenisdescribedindetail
withthefollowing:
DataSerialPort
EnablingtheserialdataportallowsthemodemtosendRS‐232dataoverthebroadbandwirelessconnectionestablishedwiththe
ESTeemrepeaterpeers.Themodemcanbeconfiguredinapoint‐to‐pointorpoint‐to‐multipointsystem.SelectYesifyouwish
toenabletheser i al dataport.
SerialMode
TherearetwodistinctmodesofoperationfortheserialportintheHorizon.TheRedirector modewillprovidetwo‐wayserial
communicationbetweentwoormoreserialdevices,whiletheTerminalServer modewi ll allowserialcommunicationto aspecific
remotesitebyconnectingthroughtelnetorSSH.Selectoneofthefoll
owingmodesofoperation:
FullRedirectorMode‐Thismodeallowsbi‐direc t ionalRS‐232datacommunicationwithotherESTeemHorizon’s. TheRS‐232data
transmissionwillappeartransparenttotheconnecteddevicesasifaserialcableisconnectedbetweenthetwoports.Thismode
willalsobe usedinamul
ti‐pointserialnetworkwereallserialdeviceswi ll needbi‐directionalcommunication(Figure6).
TerminalServerMode‐ThismodeofoperationtranslatesRS‐232serialdataintoanetwork‐orientedterminalprotocol,suchas
telnet or SSH.This mode would be selected if an interactive RS‐232 ses
sion at remote locations is desired over the wireless
Ethernetlink.
