2.6 Air-conditioning
Temperature peaks, heat pockets in the Modular Safe or conductive dusts increase the risk of outage and
reduce the service life of modern electronic components. The safe must be air-conditioned in order to pro-
vide a suitable atmospheric environment for the hardware components housed within it. To achieve this,
systems with a range of different designs and power levels are available. Generally the Modular Safe is
equipped with an air conditioning unit. The vaporisor is placed inside of the safe, the condensor and the
compressor (as an indoor or an outdoor version) are placed outside of the safe.
Method of operation of the compact split air-conditioning system
The vaporiser inside the safe essentially comprises a heat exchanger and a group of fans which circulates
the air within the safe. This means that the cooled air is blown in front of the 19" level and the warm air be-
hind the servers. In the direct vaporiser, the heat is emitted in the direction of the coolant.
The cooling energy is generated outside of the safe. The keep the cooling circuit intact, the coolant is cooled
down by the capacitor to an applicable temperature level.
Its split construction, a hermetic separation between the inside and outside circuit means that the air condi-
tioner has guaranteed smoke protection. The inside and outside circuits are connected to one another via
coolant lines and control cables which are inserted into the safe through a fire-protected cable entry. This
method of operation applies for all unit configurations.
Air-conditioning types
You can select from different variants which are dependent on the safe's assembly situation and the heat
quantity to be discharged.
Compact solution
In compact air-conditioning, the vaporiser part of the split air conditioner is positioned in the interior of the
modular safe. The outside device (compressor) is located on the outside of the service door. Rittal Modular
Safes with compact air conditioning can only be installed in areas with low or no demands as regards noise
level and in rooms which are themselves air conditioned or equipped with a ventilation system.
Calculating the dimensions of a room ventilation system
To discharge the heat generated by the air conditioners, the following parameters must be provided:
2,5 kW air-conditioning – air exchange 1.000 m³/h
4,0 kW air-conditioning – air exchange 2.000 m³/h
NOTICE
Normal ventilation may not be adequate in all cases.
Dimensioning a room air conditioning system
The cooling capacity needed to design the room air conditioning unit is calculated at 1.6 times the value of
the cooling capacity of the compact split air-conditioning unit.
The compact split air-conditioning unit can be used at temperatures between +10°C and +35°C. If the limit
values are exceeded or fallen short of, we cannot guarantee that the air conditioner will function properly.
