Close to an easily accessible grounded power supply (on an exclusively dedicated power outlet) that meets printer specifications. Near your computer. Setting up Your Printer WARNING! English Your printer weighs approximately 61.7 lbs (28 kg) without the consumables and accessories. Be sure to have help when lifting and moving it. Shipment Contents „ Printer (with 500-sheet upper media tray, 200-sheet multipurpose tray) „ Toner cartridge „ Power cord „ Two CD-ROMs (Software Utilities and Documentation ) „ Documentation (see “Documentation Set” on page 4) Interface cables aren’t included in the shipment.
Remove the tape from the printer. English 2 Attention Do not plug in the power cord until told to do so. Installing the Toner Cartridge The toner cartridge contains the OPC (Optical Photo Conductor) and toner that form the image that is developed and transferred to the media. Each toner cartridge comes with a prepaid UPS label inside the box so you can recycle the cartridge when it is empty. Attention The OPC is extremely sensitive to bright light, direct sunlight, and touch.
English Attention Never touch the copper or brass electrodes c or electrical parts that are located inside the top cover and underneath the toner cartridge, as a printer malfunction can result. c 1 2 d e 3 Be careful not to touch d# around the image transfer roller (touching certain parts in this area may result in reduced print quality) or e around the fusing unit (since the inside reaches temperatures of about 392 °F (200 °C), touching any part in this area may result in burns).
Attention English Hold the toner cartridge by its handle c. Do not open the protective coverd d of the OPC (the green area e) or allow anything to come in contact with the OPC. It is extremely sensitive to hand oils and scratches, both of which reduce print quality. This type of damage is not covered by your warranty. 4 1 c 2 d e 3 Slowly shake the toner cartridge, tilting it to the left and right 7 or 8 times to distribute the toner. The toner is nontoxic.
6 Close the top cover, pushing it down until it locks into place. Attention English Do not transport the printer with the toner cartridge installed. If toner spills within the printer, decreased print quality may result or the printer may be damaged. WARNING! The toner cartridge should not be opened under any circumstances. Installing the Exhaust Filter Insert the exhaust filter in the exhaust port on the back of the printer.
Loading the Upper Media Tray For information about approved media, refer to chapter 2, “Using Media,” in the User’s Guide. While pressing the release buttons c (one on each side of the media tray), remove the tray d. 2 1 3 10 Remove the media tray cover.

9 10 Install the media tray cover. English 8 Insert the media tray as far as possible into the printer. It should snap into place. Attach the appropriate media-size label to the the media tray. Media-size labels are supplied with this printer. 11 When printing on media larger than B4, open the output tray extension.
Loading the Multipurpose Tray English For information about approved media and about loading different types of media, refer to chapter 2, “Using Media,” in the User’s Guide. The multipurpose tray is used for all media types, especially envelopes, labels, Japanese-sized postcards, thick stock, and transparencies. 4 While pressing the button on the right side of the media guide c, slide the media guide to adjust it d. 2 English 1 Attention The media should fit easily between the guides. Improperly adjusted guides may cause poor print quality, media jams, or printer damage. 5 Slide the media as far as possible into the feed slot. Installing Accessories Attention Installing accessories always requires that both the printer and the accessories are turned off and unplugged during installation.
English Plugging in/Turning on the Printer 1 Make sure the printer is turned off. 2 Plug the printer power cord into the printer and into a dedicated, grounded, surge-protected electrical outlet. 5" 3 In compliance with UL guidelines, “The appliance inlet is considered to be the main disconnect device.” Turn on the printer. After approximately a 70-second warmup (assuming normal temperature and humidity), your printer prints a startup page and displays “IDLE” on the message window.
What’s Next? You have now completed the hardware setup of your printer. When you receive your printer, the message window language is set to English. However, status messages and configuration menus can be displayed in the message window in Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), and Korean, don’t display in the control panel message window, but choosing them makes CrownView (control panel access via an Internet connection) display in the correct language.

Function The Menu key provides access to the configuration menu. First press the Online key to take the printer off line, and then press the Menu key to access the configuration menu.

Software Utilities CD-ROM Automatic System Software Update The auto-installer will locate and download the file containing the system software to the printer, if it is present on the Software Utilities CD-ROM. Attention Operator intervention is required to prevent the system software update. If you are attempting to download previous versions of code, an error page will print stating “Low Release Level.” This will prevent older versions of system software from being downloaded over newer versions.

Utilities and PPDs Utilities Use/Benefit Crown Print Monitor for Windows This Windows utility gives an efficient serverless method for transporting print jobs directly to a MINOLTA-QMS printer via the TCP/IP protocol. The Crown Print Monitor functions on Windows Me/ 98/95 as well as Windows XP/2000/ NT4. Download This utility provides the ability to Manager download fonts, and overlays to the printer’s hard disk. It also allows you to download fonts to printer memory.

4 Follow the instructions on the screen. USB Follow the instructions on the screen to install printer software and documentation. All Other (except USB, TCP/IP, and Parallel) Follow the instructions on the screen to install printer software and documentation. TCP/IP If you chose TCP/IP, click First Time Setup. The Welcome to the New Printer Setup Wizard appears. First Time Setup needs to run only once; after that, choose In Use. Click Next. After reading the Program License Agreement, choose Accept.
TCP/IP Verify the IP address. Click Next. Click Finish. Follow the instructions on the screen to install printer software and documentation. This installation process is quite similar to the process shown below for Parallel connection. Parallel If you choose Parallel, select a language for your driver from the available list. Click OK. After reading the Program License Agreement, choose I Accept. Click Next.
Parallel If there is a problem with the installation, the screen “Running the Software Utilities CD-ROM Installer...” may appear. Choose to read the entire screen for further information, or choose to skip it by clicking Next. Choose Next to install Printer Software and Documentation to the directory shown in the box. Choose Browse to install to a different directory. Choose the setup type that best suits your needs—Easy or Custom. Click Next.
Parallel If you choose Custom, you are asked to specify which software and documentation you want to install. „ Microsoft Networks Print Provider lists the network of all Microsoft Windows PCs and servers. „ Microsoft Print Provider for NetWare lists the Microsoft NetWare client installed. „ Network Capable Printers lists printers attached directly to the network that use TCP/IP. „ Local printers lists the printers already installed.
Parallel The Printer Software Installer screen appears. Click Next. The Digital Signature Not Found screen may appear. Follow the instructions on the screen. Add a port with the Add Crown Port wizard. Click Finish. Select Default Printer to select the printer as the default device, or print a test page to confirm that the printer is ready for use. Click Next.
Parallel Wait while the software loads to the chosen directory. Select the language for your Download Manager from the available list. Click OK. The Download Manager setup screen appears.
Parallel Choose the destination folder for the Download Manager files. Click Next. Follow the instructions on the screen to install remaining components. When the installation is complete, click Finish. If the printer already has the code version you’re attempting to load or has a newer one, an error page will print a message saying that the printer will not replace a current or newer version with an older version. Wait for it to finish loading.
Installing Printer Drivers and Utilities, Windows Environments—Manual Installation If you wish to install printer drivers and utilities manually, the steps are included below.
Windows—Ethernet TCP/IP Detailed instructions for configuring TCP/IP can be found in the CrownBooks (in PDF on the Documentation CD-ROM). DHCP Installation 5" If you use DHCP to install TCP/IP, you must enable DHCP/WINS in Administration/Communications/Optional NIC/CrownNet/TCPIP printer configuration menu. See your network administrator and your CrownBooks on your Documentation CD-ROM for further information. Manual TCP/IP Installation 1 2 Connect your printer to the network with an Ethernet cable.
c Follow the steps in the Install Wizard. 5" 8 9 During software installation you can view online help by choosing the Help button. Or, select USB. USB will automatically load using Plug and Play technology. Refer to “Plug and Play Installation” on page 56. Remove the Software Utilities CD-ROM from the PC, and store it in a safe place.
Select Driver Options/Defaults Before you start working with your printer, you are advised to verify/change the default driver settings. Also, in case you have options installed, you should “declare” the options in the driver. 1 2 3 If you installed available options, proceed with the next step; otherwise, proceed with step 5. Choose Settings. Select an option (one at a time) and click Add. The option will now move to the Installed Options list.
The next screen that appears is the Add New Hardware Wizard listing MINOLTA-QMS Printing Support. 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Click Next. Leave the next screen at the default selection Search for the Best Device, Recommended, and click Next. Click Browse. On the Software Utilities CD-ROM, browse to \Drivers\Windows\ Operating System (for example, Windows ME, 98 & 95)\Driver\Language, and select OK. Click Exit and exit the Printer Installation Wizard.
6 7 8 Select the default settings for your printer, such as the default media format you use. Click Apply. Click OK and exit from the Properties dialog box. Windows—Parallel Connection Plug and Play Installation 5" 5" 1 2 Windows 95 and Windows NT4 do not support Plug and Play technology. If you’re using one of these platforms, skip to “Manual Installation of the Printer Driver” on page 62. Ethernet connections don’t support Plug and Play technology.
Windows XP In the first window of the Found New Hardware Wizard, select Install from a list or specific location. Then click Next. Select Search for the best driver in these locations. Uncheck all options except Include this location in the search. Click Browse... to open a window to locate the driver files. Browse to the appropriate language directory (for example PCL, PPD, or PS) within the Drivers\WINDOWS XP directory. Click OK. Verify your selection, and click Next.
Windows XP Click Finish. Windows 2000 Insert the Software Utilities CD-ROM, and close the CD-ROM auto-installer window. In the first window of the Found New Hardware Wizard, click Next. Select the option to Search for a suitable driver for my device. Then select Next.
Windows 2000 In the Locate Driver Files window, uncheck all boxes except Specify a location. Then select Next. Click Browse... to open a window to locate the driver files. Browse to the appropriate language directory within the Drivers\Windows 2000 directory. Click OK. In the Driver Files Search Results window, verify your selection, and click Next. Click Finish.
Windows Me/98/95 Insert the Software Utilities CD-ROM, and close the CD-ROM auto-installer window. In the first window of the Add New Hardware Wizard, click Next. Select the option to Search for the best driver for your device. Then select Next. In the window that follows, uncheck all boxes except Specify a location. Then Click Browse... to open a window to locate the driver files. Use the Browse For Folder window to browse to the \Drivers\Windows Me, 9x directory.
Windows Me/98/95 Verify your selection, and click Next. The next window show you what driver will be installed. Click Next. Give the printer a name, or leave the default name. Click Next.
Windows Me/98/95 Choose to print a test page or not, and click Finish. 3 Remove the CD-ROM from the PC, and store it in a safe place. Manual Installation of the Printer Driver 1 2 3 Connect your printer to your PC. Insert the Software Utilities CD-ROM. Exit Browser immediately. Use the Exit button, not the X in the upper right corner of your screen. 4 5 6 From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings. Choose Printers. In the Printers window, double-click Add Printer. The Add Printer wizard appears.
12 Choose the MINOLTA-QMS PagePro 9100. Click Next. If the Replace Existing Driver window appears, select it, and click Next. If the driver installed correctly, you will not see that choice. 13 14 15 16 17 Choose the LPT port. Click Next and Next again. Select Printer Name and whether you want to printer to be the default printer. If you would like to print a test page, select that. Select Finish. Remove the CD-ROM from the PC, and store it in a safe place.
6 7 8 Select the default settings for your printer, such as the default media format you use. Click Apply. Click OK and exit from the Properties dialog box. Installing Printer Drivers and Utilities, Macintosh Environments Some Notes to Consider Begin No Change Zone Address? You can connect to your printer by „ An Ethernet cable. „ A crossover Ethernet cable. „ A USB cable. Macintosh—EtherTalk Interface Configuration This section briefly describes the configuration procedure for the printer interface. You can make these configuration changes through any of the following means: „ Printer control panel „ Print Utility for Macintosh „ Remote Console „ CrownView When your printer boots up, it finds a default zone.
Macintosh—PPDs and Utilities (OS 8/9) Installation 1 Insert the PagePro 9100 Software Utilities CD-ROM in your Macintosh’s CD-ROM drive. If this screen does not appear, double-click the MINOLTA-QMS CD-ROM icon on your Macintosh desktop. 2 3 4 5 Double-click the CD-ROM icon and then double-click the Install icon. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the PagePro 9100 PPD and utilities. After the PPD and utilities installation is complete, choose Quit.
5 6 Choose the Change button in the PostScript Printer Description section. In the resulting window, select the PagePro 9100 PPD, and choose Select. Choose the Change button in the USB Printer Selection section. In the resulting window, select the PagePro 9100, and click OK. Macintosh OS 9.x—System Software 1 Insert the PagePro 9100 Software Utilities CD-ROM in your Macintosh’s CD-ROM drive. If this screen does not appear, double-click the MINOLTA-QMS CD-ROM icon on your Macintosh desktop.
5" 5 Note: If your printer’s system software version is later than the version on the CD-ROM that you are downloading, an error page will print on the printer. In this case, go to step 5. You do not need to upgrade the printer’s system software. When the system software installation is complete, remove the CD-ROM from your CD-ROM drive and store it in a safe place. Macintosh—PPDs and Utilities (OS X) Installation 1 Insert the PagePro 9100 Software Utilities CD into your Macintosh’s CD-ROM drive.
4 Double-click the appropriate language folder. You will see a list of several Minolta-QMS printer PPDs. Keep this window open; you will come back to this list in the next step. 5 Double-click your Macintosh’s hard disk icon and locate the directory in which your printer’s PPD will be stored: Hard Disk Name/Library/Printers/ PPDs/Contents/Resources/ Language Abbreviation.lproj/ 6 5" For example, en.lproj would designate English.
3 4 In the Printer List window, choose Add. In the resulting window, select USB for the printer type. If your printer is connected properly, you will see PagePro 9100 in the window. 5 Choose the Printer Model popup menu to select the PagePro 9100 PPD, and choose Add. The printer should appear in the Printer List. Macintosh—System Software (OS X) 1 70 Insert the PagePro 9100 Software Utilities CD-ROM in your Macintosh’s CD-ROM drive.
2 Double-click the CD-ROM icon to display its contents. 5" 3 4 Note: Unlike Macintosh OS 8/9, it is not necessary to install the PagePro 9100 PPD and utilities before upgrading the printer system software. Open a Terminal window. (Terminal is located on the hard disk in the Applications/Utilities folder.) At the command prompt, type cd /↵ cd Volumes/Minolta-QMS/“Explore This CD”/“9100 System Code”/↵ ls↵ 5 6 Record the filename of the system software file (sys_x_x_x.ps).
