Boot Selection
To select the switch’s mode of operation, the system software can be selected from
the GRUB menu during boot-up:
AOS (EdgeCOS) - The switch will use the AOS (EdgeCOS) firmware. This guide
covers CLI configuration when the switch executes using AOS (EdgeCOS)
firmware functioning as a traditional switch. (See Figure 1 - Selecting AOS
(Legacy))
OF-DPA- The switch will boot up using the Open Network Linux operating
system combined with the Open Flow Data Plane Abstraction (OF-DPA)
software adaptation layer from Broadcom. Execution of the switch in this mode
is designed for an SDN environment and requires you to operate the switch
with a controller utilizing OpenFlow protocols. (Figure 1 - Select AOS (OF-DPA))
ONIE - ONIE provides an environment to install and de-install operating
systems on the switch as desired.
(Figure 1 - Select ONIE (Version: 2015.11.12))

The rest of this guide focuses only on a description of CLI configuration when the
switch is run using Edgecore’s operating system AOS (EdgeCOS).
For OF-DPA documentation including API reference material refer to the on-line
Broadcom document repository. For ONL and ONIE operation, refer to their
respective organizations under the Open Compute Project or for ONIE see the
description “onie on page 136.
