Setting up a LONWORKS LN-Series Network
Network Design
Network design is the first thing you must plan when starting a new project or
modifying an existing one. Some of the most important factors to consider when
designing a network are the number of devices, the length of the network, and the
network access method.
To determine the network requirements, consider:
• customer requirements
• new or existing site
• number of devices that are currently installed and the number to be installed at
the site
• multiple sites
• access to the control system network for the site(s)
• number of people with access to the control system network
• future expansion
Network Architecture Types
The following sections describe the various types of network architectures that
exist.
Basic Layout
This architecture has an open distributed control system consisting of only
LONWORKS devices. There is no operator workstation or permanent network
management tool.
