where T is temperature and ε is the emissivity of the asphalt. The emissivity of a black body is
1.0, which is essentially the case for fresh asphalt. By measuring E and solving for T, the
surface temperature can by surveyed using a non-contacting sensor. Because asphalt is not a
perfect black body, the measured temperature may not be precisely accurate. However this
measurement is very useful for locating anomalous regions where the asphalt mix is not
uniform. This approach has proven useful for locating areas of segregation and other mix
defects [2].
