GPR4 Pavement Scanner – User Manual Earth Science Systems, LLC D-000002-000022 February 29, 2019 5 Theory 5.1 Theory of Operation The pavement scanner uses ground penetrating radar (GPR) and infrared (IR) sensing to characterize the surface beneath the sensing unit [1]. The GPR sends a low-energy impulse of electromagnetic (EM) energy towards the surface. Some of this energy penetrates into the subsurface and some is reflected back towards the sensor unit.
GPR4 Pavement Scanner – User Manual Earth Science Systems, LLC D-000002-000022 February 29, 2019 E = εT 4 where T is temperature and ε is the emissivity of the asphalt. The emissivity of a black body is 1.0, which is essentially the case for fresh asphalt. By measuring E and solving for T, the surface temperature can by surveyed using a non-contacting sensor. Because asphalt is not a perfect black body, the measured temperature may not be precisely accurate.
