VORTEC™ ENGINES
The Vortec™ engines that power every Sierra 1500 are given that
name for good reason. They feature “vortex technology” that
swirls and tumbles the incoming air and fuel for optimum power
and response. Vortec™ V6 and V8 cylinder heads feature kidney
shaped valve placement that facilitates a centrally located,
long-life spark plug to help promote better combustion. This
eliminates the need for 2 spark plugs and double the ignition
system, the way some competitors do.
HYBRID TWO-MODE
ELECTRONICALLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION
To conserve fuel at low speeds or under light loads, this
transmission has two integral electronic motors that engage
to give you smooth, effortless power. At higher loads and road
speeds with the Vortec
TM
6.0L V8 fully engaged, it functions just
like a conventional automatic transmission.

ENGINEERING
NUMEROUS TECHNOLOGIES – ONE GOAL.
There’s no debate – fuel efficiency is a top priority these days. Just because you need the capability
of a full-size pickup doesn’t change that reality. In fact, it makes fuel efficiency even more critical.
Sierra 1500 models incorporate a series of technologies that enhance fuel efficiency. Engine
management systems like Active Fuel Management® and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) help the 315
horsepower 5.3-litre Vortec™ V8-powered Sierra XFE achieve 13.7 L/100 km city and 9.1 L/100 km
highway ratings. That’s significantly better than the comparable Ford F-150 V8-powered pickup.*
The technological breakthrough in the Sierra lineup continues to be Sierra Hybrid, with the only hybrid
powertrain technology available in the full-size pickup class. Its innovative Two-Mode Hybrid System
includes a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), an Electronically Variable
Transmission (EVT) and a regenerative braking system that together work in conjunction with the
332 horsepower Vortec™ V8 with Active Fuel Management®. The system can run on gasoline power alone,
electric power alone, or a combination of the two. The result: Sierra Hybrid has a rating of 10.1 L/100 km
city – less than the Honda Accord V6 and the Ford Fusion V6.** That’s a remarkable achievement for a
truck capable of carrying a payload of up to 693 kg (1527 lb.) and a maximum trailering capacity of 2767 kg
(6100 lb.). A technological feat – more proof how far GMC’s Professional Grade engineering can take you.
ENGINE TECHNOLOGIES: HYBRID TECHNOLOGIES:
VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT)
VVT monitors and adjusts engine valve open and close timing for
near-peak levels of torque across the entire range of engine speeds.
This not only provides added responsiveness in low-speed driving
and while passing or trailering – it also optimizes fuel efficiency.
300-VOLT NIMH BATTERY PACK
Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack can store a lot of energy in
a small space. In fact, Sierra Hybrid’s 300-volt battery pack is
strong enough to propel the truck for significant distance on
electric power alone, yet it’s small enough to fit under the rear seat.
ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT®
This technology seamlessly deactivates or reactivates four of
the engine’s eight cylinders. That means when Sierra is hauling
a light load or cruising on the highway, it can operate on just four
cylinders. When more power is required for passing, or when
carrying a heavier load, Active Fuel Management® draws upon
the power of all eight cylinders. Active Fuel Management® is
included in the Vortec
TM
5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM
During normal deceleration, regenerative braking uses the
motors in the hybrid transmission as generators to slow the
vehicle by applying electrical resistance rather than using brake
friction. At the same time, the motors are capturing that energy
as electricity and storing it in the 300-volt battery pack, making
electric power available for the next acceleration cycle.
