AC/DC Charger

This is a sophisticated hobby product. It must be operated with caution
and common sense and requires some basic mechanical ability. Failure
to operate this Product in a safe and responsible manner could result
in injury or damage to the product or other property. This product is not
intended for use by children without direct adult supervision. Do not
attempt disassembly, use with incompatible components or augment
product in any way without the approval of Horizon Hobby, Inc. This
manual contains instructions for safety, operation and maintenance. It
is essential to read and follow all the instructions and warnings in the
manual, prior to assembly, setup or use, in order to operate correctly
and avoid damage or serious injury.

the sequence when disconnecting.

cool between charges.
• AlwaysterminateallprocessesandcontactHorizonHobbyifthe

WARNING:Neverleavechargerunattended,exceed
maximumchargerate,chargewithnon-approvedbatteries
or charge batteries in the wrong mode. Failure to comply may result
inexcessiveheat,reandseriousinjury.

GETTING STARTED
CAUTION:NeverconnecttheACandDCinputcordstoan
active power source at the same time. This will void the
warranty, cause product damage and possibly injure the user.
When Using External DC Power Source:
1.Attachtheplugofyourcharger’sDCpoweradaptercordtothe
chargerDCpowerinputport.
NOTICE: Alwaysconsult12Vbatterycollateralmaterialsor
HorizonHobbybeforeusingwithsourcesotherthanstandardAC
wall outlet.
When Using External AC Power Source:
2.ConnecttheincludedjumperplugtotheDCpowerportonthe
side of the charger.
3.AttachtheACpowercordtothecharger.Makesurethecord
plugisfullyseatedinthesocket,thenconnecttheACpower
cord to an appropriate power socket.
4.Whenpoweredon,thecharger’sLCDpanelglowsblueandthe
internalcoolingfaninitiates.Whenthechargerispoweredon,
amessagewillappearontheLCDscreen.
CAUTION: Always power on the charger before
connecting a battery, or damage to the charger and the
battery can result.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
BATTERY KEY:Presstoaccess7MainMenuScreens,6ProgramSelectionsand1UserSet.
START KEY: Press to access submenus, adjust operating values, save value changes and start chosen
battery charging action.
DECREASE OR INCREASE KEY: Press to scroll through submenu screens or change screen values.
During charging:
Decrease key– CanbepressedtoshowseveralparametermessagesontheLCDscreenincluding:
•EndVoltage •CapacityCut-off •SafetyTimersetting •TemperatureCut-off •InputPowerVoltage.
Increase key– Canbepressedtoseechargeforeachcell(examplebelow).(PresstheDecrease key toreturntotheCharge
Monitorscreen.)
BATTERY TYPE:
CAUTION: Before you begin charging a battery, always
ensure you have selected the correct chemistry and
battery type information to correspond to the battery
you are charging.
CHARGER START UP SCREEN
After powering on, you will briefly see the model information startup
screen.Outofthebox,thechargerispre-programmedtodisplay
theLi-Poprogrammingscreen.Ifanewbatterytypeisselected,the
corresponding programming screen will be displayed for the selected
battery type until another type is selected.
LITHIUM (Li–Po/Li–ION/Li–Fe) BATTERY CHARGING
CAUTION:ONLYusetheLithiumbatteryprogrammenus
forthecharginganddischargingofLithiumbatterypacks.
ThechargingofotherbatterytypesusingtheLichargeprograms
will result in damage to the battery and perhaps the charger.
CAUTION: If at any time during the charge process the
batterypack(s)becomehotorbegintopuffunplugthe
battery immediately and discontinue the charge process as
batteries can cause fire, collateral damage and injuries.
CAUTION: Always charge battery packs at settings
recommended by the battery manufacturer for the cell
count,voltageandcapacityofabatterypack(forexample,2S,
3S,etc.).Donotsetcapacity(amps)andvoltagesohighthatthe
charger’s200Wattmaximumoutputlimitisexceeded.Usinga
charge rate that is not compatible with the battery capacities may
result in damage or malfunction of the charger or batteries.
• GotothePROGRAMSELECTscreentochoosethedesired

• PresstheIncrease or Decrease key to go to one of the control
screens:
–CHARGE –BALANCE –FASTCHARGE
–STORAGE –DISCHARGE
• Beforeconnectingthebatterytothecharger,connectthecharger
and balancing connectors.
• PresstheStart Key to adjust charging values.
–Amperagecanbesetbetween0.1and10.0A
–Voltageisdependentonthenumberofcellsan
lithiumbatterytype.Valuesarebetween3.7V
for1Sbatteriesandupto22.2Vfor6Sbatteries.
To select values other than default values:

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS
WARNING:Failuretoexercisecautionwhileusingthis
product and comply with the following warnings could result
inproductmalfunction,electricalissues,excessiveheat,FIRE,and
ultimately injury and property damage.
• Neverleavethepowersupply,chargerandbatteryunattended
during use.
• PresstheStart key again to save the pack voltage value
• Ifnovaluesareashing,PresstheDecrease key or Increase
keytoselectanotherprogramsuchasBALANCE,FASTCHG,
STORAGEorDISCHARGE.
• PressandholdtheStart keyforapproximately3secondsuntil
thescreenchangestotheStartBatteryCheck/Chargesequence.
• Thescreenwillshowbatteryandsettinginformation.
• IfinformationafterR:(Charger)andS:(Settings)(Item A) does
not match, pess the Battery key to change values as needed.
• IfRmatchesS,presstheStart key to confirm and charging will
begin.
• DuringCharging,pesstheDecrease key to display values such
asEndVoltage,CapacityCutoff,SafetyTimersetting,Temperature
CutoffandInputPowerVoltage.
• PresstheIncrease key to see charge for each cell.
• Pressthe Decrease key to return to main screen.
• Ifthetimerisset,thechargerwillsoundwhenchargingiscom-
plete.
• PresstheBattery key to return to main menu.
• PresstheBattery keyagainuntilthePROGRAMSELECTLithium
battery screen displays.

BALANCE CHARGING
BalanceChargingensureseachcellinabatterypackischargedto
the same capacity and voltage level as the other cells.
To select values other than the default values:

FAST CHARGE
Near the end of a standard charging cycle, the charger switches
fromConstantCurrent(CC)modetoConstantVoltage(CV)modeto
slowly “top off the current in the battery pack as close as possible
tothemaximumcapacity.InFastChargetheCVmodeiseliminated
in order to greatly shorten the charging time; however, the final
capacity of the battery will be less than what you would get using
the standard charge method.
To select values other than the default values:
Press the Start keysotheChargeCurrentvalue(Item A)

STORAGE
Ifyoudon’tplanonusingyourbatteryforalongtime,itisbestto
charge(ordischarge)thebatterytoit’soptimalstoragevoltageand
capacity.ThesevoltagevaluesaredifferentforLi-Po(3.85V),Li-Fe
(3.3V)andLi-Ion(3.75V)batterypacks.ByusingStorageCharge,
thechargerwillautomaticallychargeordischarge(dependingonthe
currentchargelevel)thebatterytoanappropriatelevel.
To select values other than the default values:
• PresstheStart keysotheChargeCurrentparameter
(Item A) flashes
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase keytoDECREASEor

DISCHARGE
Youcanverifyyourbattery’scapacitybydischargingthepacktoits
minimum voltage level and measuring the current as the pack is
discharged.

Ni-MH/Ni-Cd BATTERY CHARGING
CAUTION:ONLYusetheNi-MHorNi-Cdchargeprogram
menusforcharginganddischargingNi-MHorNi-Cd
battery packs. The charging of other battery types using the
Ni-MHorNi-Cdchargeprogramswillresultindamagetothe
batteryand/orcharger.
• GotothePROGRAMSELECTNi-MHorNi-Cdbatteryscreen.
• PresstheDecrease or Increase key to go to one of the control
screens:
–CHARGE –DISCHARGE –CYCLE
• ConnectNi-MHorNi-Cdbatterytothecharger.
• PresstheStart key and adjust charging values.
To select values other than the default values:
• PresstheStart keysotheChargeCurrentvalue(Item A)
flashes
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase keytoDECREASEor
INCREASEtheChargeCurrentvalue
• PresstheStart keyagaintosavetheChargeCurrentvalue
• PressandholdtheStart keyforapproximately3secondsuntil
thescreenchangestoStartBatteryCheck/Chargesequence.
• Onceacharge(ordischarge)cyclehasbeenstarted,thecharger
will check the battery settings. If all settings are within acceptable
values,chargingwillbegin.InformationisdisplayedontheLCD
screen(informationmayvary).
• Ifthetimerisset,thechargerwillsoundwhenchargingis
complete.
• PresstheBattery key to return to the main menu.
• PresstheBattery keyagainuntilthePROGRAMSELECTNi-MH
orNi-Cdbatteryscreendisplays.

to its minimum voltage level and measuring the current as the
pack is discharged.

help you compare batteries for the best run time and power.
To select values other than the default values:
• PresstheStart key so the cycle type (Item A) flashes
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase key to set the cycle type
asCHG>DCHGorDCHG>CHG
• PresstheStart key again to save your choice and the
number of cycles (Item B) flashes
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase keytoDECREASEor
INCREASEthecyclecountbetween1to5
• PresstheStart key again to save the cycle count value
Thechargersoundswhenthecharging(ordischarging)processis
complete(ifBuzzerissettoON).
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase key to go to one of the
NiMHbatterychargingoperationscreenslistedabove.
Pb BATTERY CHARGING
CAUTION:ONLYusethePbchargeprogrammenusfor
thecharginganddischargingofPb(Lead-AcidorSealed
Lead-Acid)batterypacks.Thechargingofotherbatterytypes
using the Pb charge programs will result in damage to the battery
and charger.
ThenatureofaLead–AcidorSealedLead-Acidbatteryisvery
differentfromthatofLithium,Ni-MHorNi-Cdbatteries.Theoutput
current of a Pb battery is lower than other batteries relative to their
capacities.Furthermore,leadacidbatteriescan’tbechargedata
levelgreaterthan1/10ththeircapacity.Forexample,a5000mAh
leadacidbatterycan’tbechargedatarategreaterthan0.5A.For
more details on the charge and discharge capabilities of your battery,
please refer to charging data supplied by the battery manufacturer.
• GotothePROGRAMSELECTPbbatteryscreen.
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase key to select one of the
Pb functions:
–CHARGE –DISCHARGE
• ConnectthePbbatterytothecharger.
• PresstheStart key to adjust charging values.
To select values other than the default values:
• PresstheStart keysotheChargeCurrentparameter
(Item A) flashes
• PresstheDecrease key or Increase keytoDECREASEor
INCREASEChargeCurrentvalue,(Pbbatteriesare2.0Vpercell,
fora6-cellpack,thiswouldbe2.0Vx6cells=12.0V)
