This product can perform 3 quick tests to determine if US paper
money is real or counterfeit. If you have doubts about a bill, you
should use all three to help you make a determination.
UV (Ultraviolet Light)Test for US Currency:
IMPORTANT: This test is for US notes $5 and higher printed 1996 and after. There are no
UV markings on $1 bills or older currency!
Place the bill, portrait side up, on the white platter of the Tri Test. Locate the toggle switch
on the right side of the unit, and press forward to activate the UV light. When activated, the
platter will not be illuminated, but there will be a faint purplish glow shining down from the
light-bar on the top. With genuine US currency, you will notice the security stripe illuminated
in the proper location and color. If you cannot locate the stripe, or the stripe is the wrong
color or location, the bill may be counterfeit. See pictures below:
IMPORTANT: Please note that on the $100 bill, the pink stripe can be extremely faint,
especially in bright ambient light. If you cannot locate the stripe, it is important to do the
other 2 tests.
Watermark Portrait / Stripe Micro-Print Test for US Currency:
IMPORTANT: This test is for US notes $5 and higher printed 1996 and after. There are no
watermark portraits or security stripes $1 bills or older currency!
After you’ve completed the UV Test described above, flip the toggle switch in the other
direction, which will illuminate the platter area of the Tri Test. On the right side of bills, you
will see a watermark portrait appear, which should mirror the portrait in the center of the
bill. The only exception is the newest $5 bill printed 2006 and later. On those bills, the
watermark is a large number 5. Also note that printing will appear where the security stripe
is located. The print is quite small, but clearly visible, and indicates the bill denomination:
