Water Separator (4TNV98 Diesel
Engine Only) - Clean
Periodically clean the fuel filter / water separator
element and inside cup.
1. Position an approved container under the cup
(Figure5-16, (1)) of the fuel filter/water
separator to collect the contaminants.

2. Close (Figure5-16, (2)) the fuel cock
(Figure5-16, (3)).
3. Loosen the drain cock (Figure5-16, (4)) and
drain the contaminants. See Drain Fuel
Filter/Water Separator.
4. Turn the retaining ring (Figure5-16, (5)) to the
left (Figure5-16, (10)) and remove the cup
(Figure5-16, (6)). If equipped, disconnect the
sensor wire (Figure5-16, (7)) from the cup
before removing the cup.
5. Carefully hold the cup to prevent fuel from
spilling. If you spill any fuel, clean up the spill
completely.
6. Remove the float ring (Figure5-16, (8)) from the
cup. Pour the contaminants into the container
and dispose of it properly.
7. Clean the element (Figure5-16, (9)) and inside
cup. Replace the element if it is damaged.
8. Install the element and O-ring in the bracket.
9. Position the float ring in the cup.
10. Check the condition of the cup O-ring. Replace
if necessary.
11. Install the cup to the bracket by tightening the
retaining ring to the right (Figure5-16, (6)) to a
torque of 11-15 ft•lb (15-20 N•m; 1.5-2.0kgf•m).
12. Close the drain cock. Reconnect the sensor
wire if equipped.
13. Open the fuel cock (Fi
gure5-16, (3)).
14. Prime the fuel system. See topic, “Priming the
Fuel System” in “When required”.
15. Check for leaks
