HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR
POOLS AND HOT TUBS
When you have an irregularly shaped patio or pool deck, it gets
more challenging to get perfect measurements. Here are a couple
of easy methods to help you get an estimated measurement.
Check out the example below, which is a pretty common patio
layout. For this situation, first you’ll split the area into two sections:
A & B.
AREA A: Measure the length and width of this rectangular area.
AREA B: Draw an imaginary rectangle over this curved shape. Start
from the Center of the Curve (see tip below) then measure to the
opposite side of your rectangle (the straight edge) to get the width.
Now measure the entire rectangular edge to get your length.

Now you can use the Basic Formula
from the previous page, then add
the square footage of the two
shapes together to get your total
square footage.
Not sure where the Center of the
Curve is? It’s the mid-point between
the Bottom of the Curve (the
middle of the U-shape) and the Top
of the Curve (or the point where
your curve meets your rectangular
area). Since we’re only aiming for
an estimate, you can guestimate on
this mid-point.

MEASURING PROJECT
SPACES WITH CURVES
If there is a pool or hot tub in the middle of the space you’re
trying to measure, you’ll need to subtract the area of the pool
or hot tub from your total calculation. But most pools aren’t
squares! How can you figure out the square footage of these
curvy and round spaces?
Here are a few common scenarios on the next page:
