The market oers many A/C service units with
a hybrid option, but by far not all of them are
doing a really clean job. And this although
everyone in the industry agrees that the com-
plete system needs to be flushed thoroughly
when changing over from one refrigerant to
another.
But what does “thorough flushing” actually
mean? SAE J2843 H stipulates a maximum
permissible oil cross contamination of 0.1%
on the total oil volume. For 150 ml of PAG oil
this translates to a mere 0.15 ml. (For compa-
rison: one drop of oil is about 1 ml in volume.)
That said, it won’t be enough to just hook on
the service hoses and flood the system with
refrigerant, as is common practice with some
service units available in the market. Refrige-
rant lines, magnetic valves and service hoses
will always contain residual oil, which can
lead to cross contamination and dangerous
high-voltage exposure.
It is pretty much the same as if you would try
to clean a greasy glass just by filling it up with
water. Things are quite dierent, though,
if you force a large amount of water through
the glass – about the same way a high-
pressure cleaner would. Dometic WAECO’s
hybrid concept is based on a similar
principle: An additional flush container is
installed and put under vacuum. The
refrigerant required for cleaning the unit’s
internal components is forced through the
system several times, under high pressure
and in changing directions. The result:
service hoses, magnetic valves and the likes
are almost 100% clean.
