Subwoofersarecalibratedusingadifferentprocessthantherestofthespeakers,preferably
withdifferentequipment.Toproperlycalibratethesubwoofer,arealtimeanalyzer(RTA)
isrequired.IfanRTAisnotavailable,youcanapproximatethesettingswithanSPLmeter.
WhenusinganRTA,propercalibrationrequires
settingtheLFEchannelsignalsenttothe
subwoofer,withinitstypicalbandwidthof25to120Hz,10dBhigherthanthemain
channels.Figure A9showsasampleRTAdisplayofaproperlycalibratedsubwoofer.

channelwhentheCenterchannelmeasures85dBc)cangiveanapproximatelevelwithan
SPLmeter.Thislevelvarieswith thequalityofthemeterbeingused.
Forfuturereference,ifcalibrating
thesubwooferwithanRTA,measurethelevelwithan
SPLmeterandnotethemeterreadingforthepropercalibration.Usethismeasuredvalue
forquickchecksofthesystemcalibrationinthefuture.
