socketÑA female connector designed to receive a male connector or plug.
stop bitÑThe last transmitted element in each character, which permits the
receiver to come to an idle condition before accepting another character.
synchronous transmissionÑThe transmission of data in which both stations
are synchronized. Codes are sent from the transmitting station to the receiving
station to establish the synchronization, and data is then transmitted in contin-
uous streams.
subnet maskÑThe number of bits in an IP address used for the subnet
address.
T
T1ÑA digital carrier facility used to transmit a DS1 formatted digital signal at
1.544 Mbps.
T1 normally can handle 24 voice conversations, each one digitized
at 64kbps. But, with more advanced digital voice encoding techniques, it can
handle more voice channels.
T1 is a standard for digital transmission in North
America.
T1 lines are used for connecting networks across remote distances.
T3ÑA digital carrier facility used to transmit a DS3 formatted digital signal
at
44.736 Mbps.
T-CarrierÑA time-division, multiplexed digital transmission facility, usually
operating at an aggregate data rate of
1.544 Mbit/s.
TIAÑTelecommunications Industry Association. A Washington lobbying
and trade association, the result of the merger in
1988 of the USTA (United
States Telephone Association) and the EIA (Electronic Industries Associa-
tion). TIA sets telecommunications standards worldwide for physical level
interfaces (RS232, RS422, an so on.).
telnetÑ A remote terminal application that enables the user to log on to a
remote computer on the same
IP network. The user can work from the PC as
if it were a terminal attached by a hard-wired line to the remote computer.
The application uses the Telnet Internet protocol.
transmitterÑIn 64K mode, the transmitter inserts the frame bit, with a Þxed
pattern of
101100.
TRAPÑA mechanism by which a device automatically sends an alarm for cer-
tain network events to a management station. The management station can ini-
tiate a polling sequence to the device to determine the cause of the problem.
