SYNC I/O Guide
10
When Pro Tools launches, the SYNC I/O Word
Clock Out port will switch to 256x Slave Clock
output. In stand-alone use, you can manually
configure the SYNC I/O for 256x Base Clock
output using SYNC I/O Setup software utility
(Windows only) or front panel controls.
MachineControl
On MachineControl-enabled Pro Tools systems,
SYNC I/O supports Serial Deck Control mode
and Remote 9-Pin Deck Emulation mode.
For best performance on Windows systems, use
the COM ports on the Windows computer.
For best performance on Macintosh systems, use
a Keyspan USA28x USB serial adapter.
Some devices, such as non-linear video decks,
may work well on the SYNC I/O’s 9-pin ports.
As many as two machines can be connected to
the two 9-pin Out ports on the SYNC I/O. You
can control one machine at a time, and switch
between them from within Pro Tools. These
ports support all MachineControl modes except
Remote 9-Pin Deck Emulation mode. For Re-
mote Deck Emulation mode on Macintosh sys-
tems, a Keyspan USA28x USB serial adapter is re-
quired.

Serial Deck Control Mode
For Best Serial Deck Control
For best serial deck control, connect your deck
as follows:
To connect a deck to a Windows computer:
Connect the computer’s COM port to the ma-
chine, using the provided 9-pin RS-322 to RS-
422 cable.
To connect a deck to a Macintosh computer:
1
Connect a Keyspan USA28x USB serial adapter
(not provided) to a USB port on the computer.
2
Connect the provided male mini DIN-8 serial
to male 9-pin D-sub Deck Control cable to the
end of the adapter.
3
Connect the end of the cable to the machine.
For Limited Serial Deck Control (Non-Linear
Decks Only)
Connect a standard 9-pin cable from one of
the 9-pin Out ports on the SYNC I/O to the 9-
pin input of the machine. Due to performance
limitations, this configuration should be used
primarily with non-linear decks.
