Chapter 3: Using Your System 41
Using MIDI Machine
Control (MMC) with a BRC
This section provides an example of how
you can utilize MIDI Machine Control in
your synchronized Pro Tools/ADAT sys-
tem. MMC can often solve problems you
may experience when trying to control one
device from another’s transport while us-
ing certain combinations of sync peripher-
als. Refer to the Pro Tools Reference Guide for
details on using MMC with Pro Tools.
In this setup, Pro Tools is the transport
master over a BRC/ADAT system using
MIDI Machine Control (MMC). The hard-
ware connections for this setup can be
found in the Synchronization Connections
section in Chapter 2.
Configuring MIDI
Macintosh: OMS or FreeMIDI
If you are using FreeMIDI, you must have
FreeMIDI version 1.34 or higher. FreeMIDI is
available from Mark of the Unicorn.
1 Make sure that OMS or FreeMIDI has
been recognized by your MIDI interface.
2 Make sure you have a device called the
BRC. OMS and FreeMIDI both have a preset
for the BRC.
3 If you are using FreeMIDI, go to the Fre-
eMIDI Preference window and select Emu-
late OMS/FreeMIDI applications.
4 In OMS or FreeMIDI, make sure that the
BRC is set to “RECEIVE MMC” and sends
and receives MTC. You do not need to en-
able any receive channels.
If you are using FreeMIDI and have an MTP
or MTP AV make sure you have set MTC as the
LTC source in your MTP Control Panel. The MTP
Control Panel comes with your MoTU MIDI in-
terface, and is also available from Mark of the
Unicorn.
Windows
Make sure your MIDI interface is properly
connected and recognized by your system.
In Windows, Pro Tools popup menus of
MIDI ports simply list the available hard-
ware MIDI ports of the currently installed
MIDI Interface.
Configuring the BRC
Before you configure the BRC, make sure a
tape is in the ADAT and that the correct
start time is selected.
1 Press the GEN SYNC button on the BRC.
2 Press the EDIT button just (just to the
right of the GEN SYNC button), then press
GEN SYNC until Generate Sync-MIDI is
displayed in the display. If MTC is not al-
ready selected as the Generate Sync MIDI
choice, use the up/down arrows in the
BRC’s keypad (the lowercase/uppercase
keys) to display MTC.
3 With MTC selected, press the EDIT but-
ton to exit edit mode.
Pro Tools needs to send an MMC message
that will tell the BRC what start time to go
to, but Pro Tools is going to be waiting for
the timecode to come back from the BRC
when the ADATs begin to play.
