User guide
- Compacting audio files and regions can be an effective way to maximize your storage capabilities, however, it is a
DESTRUCTIVE process and CANNOT BE UNDONE.
- When Compacting, you will permanently alter the original "parent"* audio files, that are referenced by the regions
residing within the session. The portions of audio files referenced by the audio regions removed from your session,
will be deleted, thus consolidating (compacting) the "parent" audio files to only contain the audio actually used in
the session.
- The Padding setting allows you set an amount of extra audio at the beginning and end of each region's boundaries.
- This is a process normally done near or at the end of the session.
- Look up "Compact Selected" in the Pro Tools reference manual glossary for details.
* "Parent" audio files are the audio files used in your Pro Tools session. They are listed in the session's Audio
Regions List in Bold on the right side of the Edit Window. If the Audio Regions List is not showing, click on the two
arrows pointing to the left on the bottom right-hand corner of the Edit Window.
- Regions are pieces of audio "captured" from an audio file and are displayed in normal text, not in Bold. Regions
are subfiles of the parent file.
- The Pro Tools Reference Manual provides additional basic Pro Tools concepts.

How can I move files from one session to another and retain Time Code stamps?
- Highlight the regions/files you wish to move to another session in the Audio Regions List or on its track in the Edit
Window.
- Select "Time Stamp Selected" from the Audio Menu (above the Audio Regions List) and set a User Time Stamp to
the desired position in time.
You may enter a new SMPTE time in three different ways:
1) Enter the numbers manually (with the help fo the arrow keys).
2) Click the Current Time Code button (or press the Equal key), if you want to compute the imcoming time code
address.
3) Click the Current Selection button, if you want to enter the start time of the current on-screen selection.
4) Click OK.
This command can be used in "batch mode" to set new time stamps for several regions at a time. To do this, simply
select several regions and choose the Time Stamp Selected command. One after another, a dialog will open for
each region, allowing you to quickly enter new values. Once entered, the user time stamps can be displayed in all
regions currectly placed in tracks.
- With the regions/files still selected, choose "Export Region Definitions" from the same Audio menu.
- Import files into the new session and use Spot mode to select the User Timestamp.
- The Original Time Stamp will now be retained.
- If you have a large number of regions in each track, then you may consider using 'Consolidate Selection' from the
Edit menu.

How do I set up a click track in Pro Tools 5.x?
Pro Tools 5.x can generate a MIDI note click track that follows the tempo set in either the Tempo Ruler or the
Conductor track.
- This is not an audible signal. You must route this track to a MIDI device, or a QuickTime instrument. OMS must be
configured for your MIDI device(s) or QuickTime for the click track to be setup.
- In the MIDI menu, select Click Options and select the destination device under Output Device, which will only be
listed after doing an OMS setup.
- Enable the Click track by selecting Click from the MIDI menu or Transport window.
- Make sure the audio outputs of your MIDI device are routed into a mixer or an auxillary track in Pro Tools (via the
Digidesign interface). This must be done in order to hear the audio coming from your MIDI device.
In Pro Tools 6.0x there is a MIDI click plug-in, which is an audible click track that doesn't require a MIDI device to
be heard. Create a mono aux. input track and instantiate the click plug-in in the Mix window.
