went without incident. I started with an RME Micstasy,

which worked pretty much plug and play.

I then started bouncing 48 track 24-bit files back and

forwards between my machines using an RME MADI

card in my other PC. I did have a couple of freezes on

my old Fujitsu, and in the end I stuck a new system disk

in with a clean install of XP and my freezing went away.

Windows 7 64-bit was pretty much entirely without

incident. I was kind of expecting more issues on OSX, but

actually it was fine, again using Reaper. Latency is system

dependent and so DiGiCo is not for quoting any figures.

As they love to say in the States: “your mileage may vary.”

Conclusion

There are, of course, a few things to consider with UB

MADI. It’s coax only (no optical), you currently can’t

cherry pick from the 64 MADI channels (it uses the first

48 channels of the MADI stream), and standard USB

connectors don’t lock in place (these do exist, but it’d have

to be a retro-fit).

However, it is 48 channels of MADI into USB2 in

a portable, rugged box. The UB MADI is a great bit

of kit that is going to be very popular in both live and

studio circles. MADI to USB is ready for lift off. ∫

To date, most of the development has been done with

XP, but there are also drivers for Win7 (both Windows in

32-bit and 64-bit versions) and OSX.

In Use

I used the box with four systems. My daily Fujitsu

workstation XP, awash with far too much software and

drivers and the registry gunk that gathers over three or

four years of daily use. A much cleaner Win 7 64-bit

system, another much cleaner XP system but based on

AMD, and a MacBook Air circa 2010 with Lion 10.7.4,

which is the required OS for the UB MADI on a Mac.

If you want to record or playback 48 tracks of 24-bit

audio at 48kHz then you need a system that will cope with

writing nearly three and a half gigabits a minute or about

6 megabytes a second. Which doesn’t sound too much,

but if you want the whole show recorded without a glitch

then your system has to maintain this without a hitch

over an hour and half. 35 gigabytes of information without

repetition, hesitation, or blue screening. All four of my

machines managed the trick, though my older AMD

system struggled. Even with a separate drive it would

occasionally drop out. I fiddled with buffers and things,

but basically the moral is don’t try and record 48 tracks on

an antique computer – you are asking for trouble.

And that, of course, is the problem with making the

UB MADI so damned universal.

Just be realistic that’s all I’m saying. What you also need

to do is check out your Deferred Procedure Call latency.

If you are struggling with streaming all that audio, it could

be a rogue driver that is cramping your style. Google ‘DPC

latency’, ignore people trying to sell you silicon, and head

over to thesycon.de – all will become clear.

Currently the UB MADI supports only 48kHz sample

rates, but there’s no intrinsic reason why other rates cannot

be supported in the future. The driver is minimalist – you

don’t get a fancy control panel – it’s an on or off situation.

I would have loved something like RME’s metering and

matrix panels as an easy place to check ins and outs are

working and give you some metering, but you can always

use your DAW to do this.

On hand I had Reaper on XP, 7 64-bit, and OSX; and

Sequoia 11 (12 coming soon) on XP 32-bit. If you do live

in OSX world you will need at least 10.7.4 to use the

UB MADI. It actually pushed me to upgrade to Lion, and

of course you can now go for 10.8 Mountain Bike.

It is with some trepidation that I use my day-to-day

Fujitsu Celsius machine for new hardware (it’s been in

too many registry hacking wars) but you have to start

where you are, and so I did. The installation was easy and

Physics Versus Emotion

Despite what many would regard as the

benets of the techno-physical approach,

a great deal of the literature and advice

on the use of microphones is based on

apparently non-technical considerations.

Often a microphone will be listed as best

suited for vocals simply because it has,

by chance, sounded pleasant on a previous

occasion or looks similar in shape to one

that was used in that way.

tube (valve) microphones give ‘a warm

sound’ because they become physically

warm in use – or that large microphones

yield a bigger ‘sound image’ (whatever that

means) than smaller designs. This latter

notion undoubtedly stems from folklore

that has been fostered by those with

vested interests in the promotion of large-

diaphragm microphones. In purely physical

terms there is, of course, no requirement

for the diaphragm to be large in order to be

able to respond to low frequencies.

Microphones for a Particular Use?

Although it is extremely common to be told

that such and such a microphone is good

for, say, violins, this poses the question of

why it should be considered to be so.

Should a microphone be chosen purely on

the grounds of what the sound source is?

We don’t, after all, have more than one set

of ears to hear everything, and common

sense dictates that if the microphone is

an ideal one it transforms a sound into a

perfectly corresponding electrical signal.

That suggests that the closer a microphone

is to the ideal, the more neutral it sounds,

and the more universally it can be used.

There is certainly a wide variety of very

different top-quality microphones, but it

would be wiser to see these as physically

suited to a particular application rather

than a particular sound source.

How Everything Started

The founder of Horch, Gibbs Platen is very familiar with

the world of audio. His recording studio Zuckerfabrik

was famous for American Jazz and Rock productions,

and acoustic bands such as Colosseum, Wolfgang

Dauner, John Scoﬁ eld, Alphonse Mouzon, The United

Jazz + Rock Ensemble, etc. He also freelanced for TV

and broadcast productions.

During this time, Platen became familiar with a

wide variety of microphones, but his all time favourite

for vocal recordings was the Neumann M49 tube

microphone. However, Platen felt that of these

old microphones had lost some of their expected

excellence by this time. Here, Horch Audio’s

story begins.

The Microphones

In the early nineties, Gibbs Platen and two friends

founded Horch Audio with the ambition to build a

microphone in the same vein as the M49, but improved.

That’s where the Horch RM2 came to life. In the

beginning, the RM2 was built using original parts

from Neumann. As a ﬁ nishing touch, Platen placed

a 0.5-carat brilliant diamond into the front of the

RM2, which was illuminated from the inside. Later

on, Horch modiﬁ ed the RM2 into the RM2J, with the

intention to move the sound more in direction of the

U47. The triode was replaced by a pentode, and a

new developed capsule and transformer were built in.

The RM3 was released, harking back to the sound of

the old ELA M251 and especially designed for female

vocals and instruments. The RM4, recalling the U47

sound, launched in 2007/2008. It displayed a whole new

concept – adjustable compression, and saturation of
