Inspection
In addition to regular gaugings, check deflection
whenever this seems necessary.
Deflection values consist of:
- absolute amount of deflection, measurable
by the difference between greatest and
smallest web distance during one cranks
haft rotation,
- plus or minus sign as shown below.
Normally, gauge readings increase as web distances
decrease, and vice versa.
Be sure to make readings when the engine is cold,
since the values differ according to the engine tem-
perature.
Readings should not be taken when the ship is in
dock.
