This description is valid for iDrive 3 Audio Systems only and not for iDrive 4)

Important note: 
  If the SW of the car requires an update or a KMP3 activation, switch the Gateway 
to  bypass/service mode before  you  start  the  procedure. Before  converting or 
retrofitting IPOD option, switch back to GW mode.

  there  was a  Head  Unit  hardware  change  in  03/2005 on  E65  models.  Cars  which  were 
produced before this date cannot be enabled for MP3, the text capability will not be available 
for the Gateway
