mum sonic impact on DVDs, connect the optical digital output to a Dolby

®
receiver (Denon A/V receivers are on pgs. 104-105).

PROGRESSIVE SCAN
Denon • DVM-1805 5-disc carousel DVD/CD changer
By combining progressive-scan video, multi-disc carousel convenience, and
Denon’s sturdy build quality, the DVM-1805 is the one-stop way to upgrade
your A/V system. If you own a conventional TV, use the player’s interlaced
video mode until you upgrade to a progressive-capable HDTV-ready TV.
This is one of an elite handful of DVD changers to include Faroudja’s
acclaimed DCDi
™
de-interlacer. DCDi ensures smooth, natural looking
progressive-scan picture quality by eliminating the jagged edges and other
artifacts that can occur when film-based images are converted to video.
Physically, the DVM-1805 is one of the most compact 5-disc changers
we’ve seen. Not only is its chassis unusually shallow, but the back-panel
connections are mounted on a recessed panel, so no extra depth is needed
for protruding connectors — great for cramped A/V cabinets.
Key Features:
change 4 discs while the 5th keeps playing • plays CDs, audio
CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs • 54MHz/12-bit video DAC • selectable inter-
laced/progressive-scan component video output • Faroudja DCDi de-interlacer
with 3-2 pulldown processing • 2MB buffer for quick layer change • TruSurround
for enhanced 2-speaker sound • optical and coaxial digital outputs for Dolby

Denon • DVD-2900 High-performance
universal DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-Audio player
The buzz surrounding Denon’s DVD-2900 began when the all-
new model was introduced at the 2003 Consumer Electronics
Show … and it’s been building ever since! State-of-the-art pic-
ture quality, plus the ability to play both SACD and DVD-Audio
discs makes this the smart play for audiophiles and videophiles.
The DVD-2900’s progressive-scan mode uses the most
advanced de-interlacing technology we know of — Silicon
Image’s PureProgressive
™
circuitry. Capable of processing an
astonishing 6 billion operations per second, PureProgressive
delivers DVD images with pixel-perfect clarity and fluid
motion. (This is the same de-interlacing chip used in Denon’s
$
3500
flagship DVD-9000!)
There’s nothing lightweight about this player. Built on a rigid, vibra-
tion-resistant chassis, it tips the scale at 22 pounds. Inside, audio circuits
are physically separated from video circuits, for amazingly noise-free
picture and sound. Two “Pure Direct” modes let you switch off the video
circuits, digital outputs, and display panel for ultimate sonic purity. The
DVD-2900 doesn’t just play high-resolution SACD and DVD-Audio discs,
it makes the most of them. Unlike some previous universal models, it has
a dedicated decoder for SACD to really show off this format (already an
audiophile favorite). As a bonus, your regular CD collection will sound
better, too.
Another big plus for the ’2900 is full digital bass management. Most
A/V receivers apply bass management to multichannel digital signals like
Dolby Digital and DTS, but not to the high-res multichannel analog signals
of SACD and DVD-Audio. So, the ’2900 intelligently applies bass manage-
ment while the signal is still in digital form, before converting it to analog
and passing it on to the receiver. Result? Optimally balanced multichannel
music when used with a wider variety of speakers, including sub/sat systems.
With the DVD-2900, Denon has really smacked one out of the ballpark!

Onkyo’s DV-SP500 has the performance and build quality to bring you out-
standing movie and music enjoyment for years to come. It provides selec-
table progressive/interlaced-scan output, so you see a terrific picture on a
standard TV today, and a more filmlike progressive-scan picture when you
upgrade to a digital TV. To experience digital surround sound, just use the
DV-SP500’s optical or coaxial digital output to connect to a receiver with
built-in decoding (Onkyo’s beefy Dolby Digital/DTS receivers are on
pgs. 106-107). Onkyo’s Direct Digital Path design provides a shorter,
cleaner path for the digital audio signal as it’s read off the disc.
Fans of downloaded music will appreciate the MP3 Navigator
onscreen display — it shows tracks and folders on your TV screen.
