Chapter 1 Introduction
ThismanualcontainsbothguidelinesonhowtodesignasystemusingtheDeltaNodefiberdistributedantenna
system(FiberDAS)conceptandhowtoinstall,commissionandmaintainsuchasystemforthelifespanoftheentire
installation.Itwillalsocontainmanybitsofinformationregardinggeneralpracticesin
theindustryaswellasother
information.
Whenothermanufacturershaveconvertedoffairrepeatersintofiberfedrepeaters,DeltaNodehasdevelopedthe
conceptfromscratchwithfiberdistributioninmindfromthestart.Thisallowsforextremelygoodradio
performanceandweareproudofthebestinclassnoisefigureoflessthan3dBfor
thewholesystem,remoteunit
antennaporttobasestationinterfaceport.
TheFiberDASfromDeltaNodeisalsoextremelyflexibleinitssolutionmeaningthatthesystemcanbetailoredfor
almostanyneeds.Becauseoftheflexibilitytherearealsomanyparametersthatcanbechangedbytheuser.This
manualattemptstoexplainnotonlywhattheydo,butalso
howtosetthemproperly.

Afiberdistributedantennasystem(FiberDAS)isaveryefficientwayoftransmittingradiosignalsoverlarge
distances.Uptoabout25kmoffiberbetweentheheadendandtheremoteunitisallowed,providingthattheradio
accesstechnology(RAN)donotsuffertimingissuesandthatthe
fiberlossiswithinthespecification.
Themainprincipleistouseaninfraredlightsourcewhichismodulatedwiththecombinedradiosignalsthatneeds
tobepropagated.Thefiberchannelsystemisultrawideband,rangingfrom88MHzupto2600MHzandthus
coveringmosttypesofradiocommunicationsystemssuchas
FMbroadcast,VHFcommunicationradios,TETRA,
GSM,CDMA,WCDMAandotherradioaccesstechnologiesthatareavailable.
Thedynamicofthefiberisgoodenoughtotoler atemulticarrier,multibandandmultioperatorsolutionsthisway,
butofcoursetheyallsharetheavailabledynamicsandifthereareaverylargenumberofcarriersthefiber
attenuationneedstobelookedatofcourse.
BecausemostlandmobileradiosystemsandcellularsystemsareusingFrequencyDivisionDuplex(FDD)thismeans
thatthereneedstobeeithertwoseparatefibers,onefortheuplink(signalsfromtheterminaltowardsthebase
station)andforthedownlink(signalsfromtheradiobasestationtowardstheterminal)
ortheymaybemultiplexed
onthesamefiberusingdifferentwaveleng ths.

Note: SeparateUL/DLfiberscanbeusedifitisnecessaryordesired.
Becausethemodulationisanaloguethesystemrequiresthefiberstobeofsinglemodetype.Allconnectorsusedin
DeltaNodeequipmentforFiberDASareofSCAPCtypewithaangle.Itisveryimportantthatallconnectorsin
patchesetceterabetweentheMasterUnit(MU)and
theRemoteUnit(RU)areangled,otherwisereflectionsare
causedwhichwillcauseproblemswiththequality ofthesignalsthroughthesystem.
