b
Enter the device in the Device Name box or click Select to choose from previously entered
values.
c
Enter the number of ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) or UDP (Universal
Datagram Protocol) packets to send to the device in the Number of Packets box or click
Select to choose from previously entered values.
Note These packets establish communications connections along a network.
d
Enter the number of seconds to wait between sending packets in the Timeout box or click
Select to choose from values previously entered.
e
Enter the size of the data portion of the packet in bytes in the Data Size box or click Select
to choose from values previously entered. The actual packet size sent will be the data size
plus an 8-byte header for both ICMP and UDP protocols.
f
Select Monitor Device to begin monitoring the device.
g
Select Trace Route to trace the route from the monitor station to the device. Data is
collected in the RouteDetails table and the ServiceLevels table.
Note This is useful if you want to monitor bottlenecks or response times along the route.
h
Select the protocol used to contact the host from the Select Protocol drop-down list. We
recommend using ICMP because it is faster and less intrusive. Using UDP is slower, and the
Timeout must be at least 100 seconds.
i
Select Resolve Host Name to retrieve the device’s IP address and name. To use this feature,
also select Trace Route.
Note Bottlenecks may occur along the network. Select the Resolve Host Name option to add
significant overhead to agent data processing.
j
Select Quick Check to verify that this particular device is up and running. If you choose
this feature, data will not be collected on the device.
Note Selecting Quick Check here only invokes this feature on the device in the Device Name box. For
more information on invoking Quick Check for all devices in all server groups, see “Collection
Rate” on page 84.
