Using the setup.pl script to configure Round Robin MPIO
24 Configuring and Installing the PS Series Multipathing Extension Module for VMware vSphere and PS Series | TR1074
C Using the setup.pl script to configure Round Robin MPIO
MEM is dependent upon the vStorage APIs for Multipathing which are only available with the appropriate
licensing. For vSphere environments with licensing which do not include these APIs, it is recommend that the
vSphere native Round Robin Multipathing be used. For additional information about Round Robin
Multipathing, see the document, Best Practices for Implementing VMware vSphere in a Dell PS Series
Storage Environment.
C.1 Configuring ESXi for Round Robin MPIO
Configuring an ESXi host for native Round Robin requires three steps:
1. Create an MPIO-capable vSwitch.
2. Set the PSP claim rules for PS Series volumes to Round Robin.
3. Optimize the number of IOs per path.
The first step is easily accomplished as both the MEM and native Round Robin utilize the same iSCSI
vSwitch configuration. See section 3 of this document for detailed instructions on configuring an iSCSI
vSwitch for multipathing. However, this will set the PSP (Path Selection Plugin) claim rules for PS Series
volumes to utilize the MEM, which is not desired.
Steps two and three can be manually completed by following the steps outlined in the document, Best
Practices for Implementing VMware vSphere in a Dell PS Series Storage Environment, or by utilizing a new
feature in the setup.pl script. Running the setup.pl script with the parameters below will disable the MEM
default routing of DELL_PSP_EQL_ROUTED and set the routing to VMWARE_PSP_RR (Round Robin). It
will also change the IOs per path from 1000 to 3.
