1 Before you begin Safety instructions Use the following safety guidelines to protect your computer from potential damage and to ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer. • A component can be replaced or, if purchased separately, installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
Safety precautions The safety precautions chapter details the primary steps to be taken before performing any disassembly instructions. Observe the following safety precautions before you perform any installation or break/fix procedures involving disassembly or reassembly: • • • • • • Turn off the system and all attached peripherals. Disconnect the system and all attached peripherals from AC power. Disconnect all network cables, telephone, and telecommunications lines from the system.
• Handle all static-sensitive components in a static-safe area. If possible, use anti-static floor pads and workbench pads. • When unpacking a static-sensitive component from its shipping carton, do not remove the component from the anti-static packing material until you are ready to install the component. Before unwrapping the anti-static packaging, ensure that you discharge static electricity from your body.
Transporting sensitive components When transporting ESD sensitive components such as replacement parts or parts to be returned to Dell, it is critical to place these parts in anti-static bags for safe transport. Lifting equipment Adhere to the following guidelines when lifting heavy weight equipment: CAUTION: Do not lift greater than 50 pounds. Always obtain additional resources or use a mechanical lifting device. 1 Get a firm balanced footing.
2 Hard drive assembly Installing the hard drive assembly NOTE: The Hard drive assembly can be installed only on systems with a 4-cell battery. 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer. 2 Remove the SD card: a b 3 Press the SD card in to release it from the system. Remove the SD card out of the system. Remove the battery cover: a b 8 Slide the battery cover release latch towards the unlock icon to release the battery cover [1].
4 Remove the 4-cell battery: a b c Disconnect the battery cable from the connector on the battery [1]. Remove the 2 (M2.5x3.0) screws that secure the battery to the system [2]. Remove the battery away from the system [3].
5 Install the hard drive interposer board: a b c d 10 Align the hard drive interposer board holder into its position on the system [1]. Fasten the 3 (M2.0x3.0) screws to secure the hard drive interposer board holder to the system [2]. Place the hard drive interposer board into its position on the hard drive interposer board holder [3]. Fasten the single (M2.0x3.0) and the single (M2.0x5.0) screw to secure the hard drive interposer board to the hard drive interposer board holder [4].
6 Install the hard drive assembly: a Place the hard drive in the hard drive bracket and fasten the 4 (M3.0x3.0) screws to secure the hard drive to the hard drive bracket. b c d e Insert the hard drive assembly into its slot in the system [1]. Flip down the tab at the end of the hard drive assembly [2]. Fasten the 4 (M2.5x3.0) screws to secure the hard drive assembly to the system [3]. Slide the hard drive release latch into the lock position [4].
7 To install the 4-cell battery: a b c 12 Place the battery onto its slot in the system [1, 2]. Replace the 2 (M2.5x3.0) screws to secure the battery to the system [3]. Connect the battery cable to the connector in the system board [4].
8 To install the battery cover: a b Slide the battery cover into its slot until it clicks into place [1]. The release latch automatically springs back to the lock position [2].
9 Install the SD card: a 14 Slide the SD card into its slot until it clicks into place.
