Reconguring Jumpstart and Normal Modes
On a new factory-loaded switch, the switch boots up in Jumpstart mode. You can recongure a switch to reload between Normal and
Jumpstart mode.
Jumpstart (BMP)
mode
The switch automatically congures all ports (management and user ports) as Layer 3 physical ports and acts as a
DHCP client on the ports for a user-congured time (DHCP timeout). This is the default startup mode. It is set
with the reload-type jump-start command.
Normal mode The switch loads the Dell Networking OS image and startup conguration le stored in the local ash. New
congurations require that the Management IP and Management Interface be congured manually. This mode is
set with the reload-type normal-reload command.
If a switch enters a loop while reloading in Jumpstart mode because it continuously tries to contact a DHCP server and a DHCP server is
not found, enter the stop jump-start command to interrupt the repeated discovery attempts. The startup conguration le stored in
the local ash on the switch is loaded as part of the stop jump-start command and Auto-Conguration mode is changed to Normal
reload.
The reload settings that you congure with the reload-type command are stored in non-volatile memory and retained for future
reboots. Enter the reload command to reload the switch in the current congured mode: Normal or Jumpstart mode.
• Reload a switch running BMP version 2.0 in either Normal or Jumpstart mode.
EXEC Privilege mode
reload-type {normal-reload | jump-start [config-download {enable | disable}] [dhcp-timeout
minutes]}
If you reload in Jumpstart mode, you can congure:
• config-download: Whether the switch boots up using the conguration le downloaded from the DHCP/le servers (enable)
OR if the downloaded le is discarded and the startup conguration le stored in the local ash is used (disable).
• dhcp-timeout: The amount of time the switch waits for a DHCP server response before reverting to Normal mode and loading
the startup conguration from the ash. The default time is
innity, which makes the switch continue to wait forever unless you
issue the stop jump-start command.
The range is from 1 to 50 minutes.
The default is the switch tries to contact a DHCP server an innite number of times.
• This command stops the jumpstart reload process while it is in progress and changes the reload type to Normal mode.
EXEC Privilege mode
stop jump-start
If the command is initiated while the switch is downloading an image or conguration le, the command takes eect when the DHCP
release is sent.
Example of Viewing the Congured Reload Mode
To display the currently congured Reload mode for a switch running BMP version 2.0, use the show reload-type or show bootvar
command.
Dell#show reload-type
Reload-Type : jump-start [Next boot :jump-start]
config-download : enable
dhcp-timeout : 10
Dell#show bootvar
