When loading the Dell Networking OS image, if the Dell Networking OS image on the server is dierent from the image on the local ash,
the switch downloads the image from the server onto the local ash and reloads using that image.
Next, the switch tries to load the conguration le. If the conguration le is not specied or if you disable the config-download
parameter, the switch loads the startup-cong from the local ash.
Domain Name Server
Set up a DNS to determine the host name applied in the switch startup conguration when no conguration le is retrieved from the DHCP
server.
The DNS server is contacted only when no conguration le is contained in a DHCP server response and the host name is not resolved
from the network-cong le on the switch. For more information, refer to the Dell Networking OS Conguration Guide, the IPv4
Addressing chapter.
Switch Boot and Set-up Behavior in Jumpstart Mode
When the switch boots up in Jumpstart mode all ports, including the management ports, are placed in L3 mode in a No Shut state.
The switch acts as a DHCP client on these ports for a period of time (dhcp-timeout). This allows the switch time to send out a DHCP
DISCOVER on all the Interface Up ports to the DHCP Server in order to obtain its IP address, boot image lename, and conguration le
from the DHCP server. For example:
1 The switch begins boot up process in Jumpstart mode (the default mode).
2 The switch sends DHCP Discover on all the interface up ports.

3 The IP address, boot image lename, and conguration lename are reserved for the switch and provided in the DHCP reply (one-le
read method). The switch receives its IP address, subnet mask, DHCP server IP, TFTP server address, DNS server IP, bootle name,
and conguration lename from the DHCP server.
If a DHCP oer has no image path or conguration le path, it is considered to be an invalid BMP DHCP oer and the oer is ignored.
The rst DHCP oer with the IP address, Dell Networking OS image, and conguration le, or the IP address and Dell Networking OS
image, or the IP address and conguration le is chosen.
4 The DHCP OFFER is selected.
a All other ports are set to shutdown mode.

5 The switch sends a unicast message to the le server to retrieve the named Dell Networking OS le and/or the conguration le from
the base directory of the server.
a If you use the bootfile-name option, the le name can be 256 bytes. If a lename eld is specied in the DHCP Oer, the
lename can be 128 bytes. The name can be a fully qualied URL or it can be a le name only.
b When an Dell Networking OS image is found, the switch compares that image to the version the chassis currently has loaded.
1 If there is a mismatch, the switch applies the downloaded version and reloads.
