Configuring PIM-SM
Configuring PIM-SM is a three-step process.
1. Enable multicast routing (refer to the following step).
2. Select a rendezvous point.
3. Enable PIM-SM on an interface.
1. Enable multicast routing.
CONFIGURATION mode
ip multicast-routing
2. Enable PIM-Sparse Mode.
INTERFACE mode
ip pim sparse-mode
Examples of the show ip pim Commands
To display which interfaces are enabled with PIM-SM, use the show ip pim interface command
from EXEC Privilege mode.
Dell#show ip pim interface
Address Interface VIFindex Ver/ Nbr Query DR DR
Mode Count Intvl Prio
189.87.5.6 Te 4/11 0x2 v2/S 1 30 1 127.87.5.6
189.87.3.2 Te 4/12 0x3 v2/S 1 30 1 127.87.3.5
189.87.31.6 Te 7/11 0x0 v2/S 0 30 1 127.87.31.6

NOTE: You can influence the selection of the Rendezvous Point by enabling PIM-Sparse Mode on a
Loopback interface and assigning a low IP address.
To display PIM neighbors for each interface, use the show ip pim neighbor command from EXEC
Privilege mode.
Dell#show ip pim neighbor
Neighbor Interface Uptime/Expires Ver DR
Address Prio/Mode
127.87.5.5 Te 4/11 01:44:59/00:01:16 v2 1 / S

To display the PIM routing table, use the show ip pim tib command from EXEC privilege mode.
Dell#show ip pim tib
