Bare Metal Provisioning (BMP)
Bare metal provisioning (BMP) is supported on the Dell Networking OS platform.
In a data center network, BMP automates the configuration and updating of switches, ensuring standard configurations across
the installed devices.
You can configure autoconfiguration on a single switch or on multiple switches. BMP allows you to set up a stack with a
minimum of effort, but is also useful for quick configuration of a single switch.
For more information about BMP in Auto-Configuration mode, refer to the Open Automation Guide.
BMP 3.0 eases configuration by providing the following key features:
Boot images and running configurations are specified in a DHCP server.
Files are automatically downloaded from a file server and the switch applies.
Switch access is allowed through all ports (management and user ports) with or without DHCP-based dynamic IP address
configuration of a switch.
Booting up in Layer 3 mode with interfaces already in No Shutdown mode and some basic protocols enabled to protect the
system and the network.
Supports pre-configuration and post-configuration scripts to automatically load predefined configurations and Dell
Networking OS images using DHCP and common file transfer mechanisms.
Topics:
reload-type
show reload-type
stop jump-start
reload-type
Configure a switch to reload as a DHCP client in BMP mode with all ports configured for Layer 3 traffic or in Normal mode.
Syntax
reload-type [bmp | normalreload {[autosave {enable | disable}] | [config-
scr-download {enable | disable}] | [dhcp-timeout minutes]| retry-count
number | vendor-class-identifier description]
Use the disable bmp command to stop the BMP process.
Parameters
bmp (Default) Enable the BMP reload type. The system acts as a DHCP client and
downloads the Dell Networking OS image, configuration and boot files from a
specified DHCP server.
normal-reload Enable the normal reload type and disable BMP reload type. The system retrieves
the Dell Networking OS image and startup-configuration files from the flash after
performing a reload.
auto-save Configure the auto save option to save the downloaded configuration or script file.
They are not saved by default. When auto save is configured, downloaded
configurations are automatically saved to the startup configuration. Auto saving the
downloaded configurations also requires enabling the config-scr-download
parameter. Downloaded scripts are automatically saved to the autoexec script.
config-scr-
download
{enable}
(Optional.) Configure whether the configuration file must be downloaded from the
DHCP/file servers (enable).
config-download
{disable}
(Optional.) Configure if the downloaded file will not be downloaded from the
DHCP/file servers.
