Remote Monitoring (RMON)

RMON is an industry-standard implementation that monitors network trac by sharing network monitoring information. RMON

provides both 32-bit and 64-bit monitoring facility and long-term statistics collection on Dell Networking Ethernet interfaces.

RMON operates with the simple network management protocol (SNMP) and monitors all nodes on a local area network (LAN)

segment. RMON monitors trac passing through the router and segment trac not destined for the router. The monitored

interfaces may be chosen by using alarms and events with standard management information bases (MIBs).

Congure SNMP prior to setting up RMON.

Conguring RMON requires using the RMON CLI and includes the following tasks:

• Setting the rmon Alarm

• Conguring an RMON Event

• Conguring RMON Collection Statistics

• Conguring the RMON Collection History

Fault Recovery

RMON provides the following fault recovery functions.

• Interface Down — When an RMON-enabled interface goes down, monitoring continues. However, all data values are registered

as 0xFFFFFFFF (32 bits) or ixFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF (64 bits). When the interface comes back up, RMON monitoring processes

resumes.

NOTE: A network management system (NMS) should be ready to interpret a down interface and plot the interface

performance graph accordingly.

• Stack Unit Down — When a stack unit goes down, all sampled data is lost. But the RMON congurations are saved in the

conguration le, and the sampling process continues after the stack unit returns to operation.

• Platform Adaptation — RMON supports all Dell Networking chassis and all Dell Networking Ethernet interfaces.

Setting the rmon Alarm

To set an alarm on any MIB object, use the rmon alarm or rmon hc-alarm command in GLOBAL CONFIGURATION mode.
