Bare Metal Provisioning (BMP)
Bare Metal Provisioning 2.0 is included as part of the Dell Networking OS image.
BMP improves accessibility to the S5000 switch by automatically loading pre-dened congurations and boot images that are stored
in le servers. You can use BMP on a single switch or on multiple switches.
For more information about BMP in Auto-Conguration mode, refer to the Open Automation Guide.
BMP eases conguration by providing the following key features:
Boot images and running congurations are specied in a DHCP server.
Files are automatically downloaded from a le server and the switch applies.
Switch access is allowed through all ports (management and user ports) with or without DHCP-based dynamic IP address
conguration of a switch.
Booting up in Layer 3 mode with interfaces already in No Shutdown mode and some basic protocols enabled to protect the
system and the network.
Prerequisites
Before you use BMP 2.0 to auto-congure a supported Dell Networking switch, rst congure a DHCP server and a le server in the
network.
Optionally, you can also congure a domain name server (DNS). For more information, refer to DHCP Server/Conguration, Domain
Name Server, and File Server.
NOTE: If the S5000 switch is connected to upstream aggregation switches that have virtual link trunking (VLT) enabled
and the DHCP and le servers are reachable through the VLT link aggregation group (LAG) interface, congure the VLT
members with the lacp ungroup member-independent vlt command. This allows the S5000 switch to establish
communication with the VLT switches.
Restrictions
BMP 2.0 is supported on the user ports and management ports of a switch.
Reconguring Jumpstart and Normal Modes
On a new factory-loaded switch, the switch boots up in Jumpstart mode. You can recongure a switch to reload between Normal
and Jumpstart mode.
Jumpstart (BMP)
mode
The switch automatically congures all ports (management and user ports) as Layer 3 physical ports and
acts as a DHCP client on the ports for a user-congured time (DHCP timeout). This is the default startup
mode. It is set with the reload-type jump-start command.
Normal mode The switch loads the Dell Networking OS image and startup conguration le stored in the local ash. New
congurations require that the Management IP and Management Interface be congured manually. This
mode is set with the reload-type normal-reload command.
If a switch enters a loop while reloading in Jumpstart mode because it continuously tries to contact a DHCP server and a DHCP
server is not found, enter the stop jump-start command to interrupt the repeated discovery attempts. The startup
