neighbor remains down until you enter the clear ip bgp command for the neighbor or the peer group to
which the neighbor belongs or you enter the neighbor shutdown and neighbor no shutdown
commands.
Related Commands show ip bgp summary — displays the current BGP conguration.
neighbor password
Enable message digest 5 (MD5) authentication on the TCP connection between two neighbors.

Syntax
neighbor {ip-address | peer-group-name} password [encryption-type] password
To delete a password, use the no neighbor {ip-address | peer-group-name} password
command.
Parameters
ip-address Enter the IP address of the router to be included in the peer group.
peer-group-name Enter the name of a congured peer group.
encryption-type (OPTIONAL) Enter 7 as the encryption type for the password entered. 7 means
that the password is encrypted and hidden.
password
Enter a text string up to 80 characters long. The rst character of the password
must be a letter.
You cannot use spaces in the password.
Defaults Not congured.

Usage Information
This command automatically restarts the neighbor session for the conguration to take eect.
Congure the same password on both BGP peers or a connection does not occur. When you congure MD5
authentication between two BGP peers, each segment of the TCP connection between them is veried and
the MD5 digest is checked on every segment sent on the TCP connection.
