Naming Convention for Dell PowerEdge Systems and PowerVault Servers
The naming convention used for Dell PowerEdge systems and PowerVault servers is as follows:
For the earlier generation of servers (8th and 9th Generation Servers): aBcd where
• a = server class/ capabilities
•B = generation
• c = 5 for rack servers, 0 for tower servers
• d = 0 for Intel and 5 for AMD processors
For example, in a 2850 server, 2 indicates the server class, 8 indicates the generation, 5 indicates that it is a rack server, and 0
indicates that it has an Intel processor.
For the present generation of servers (10th and 11th Generation Servers): wxYz where
• w = M/R/T (Modular, Rack, Tower)
• x = server class/capabilities
•Y = generation
• z = 0 Intel and 5 for AMD processors
For example, in a M710 server, M indicates that it is a Modular Server, 7 indicates the server class, 1 indicates that it is a 11th
generation server, and 0 indicates that it has an Intel processor.
