Overview
DellOpenManage™ServerAssistantprovidesastreamlinedandtime-saving installation procedure by guiding you through an easy-to-follow, step-by-step
process for installing the Microsoft®Windows®, Red Hat®Enterprise Linux, and SUSE®Linux Enterprise Server operating systems. Server Assistant is used
to install operating systems for systems being installed as managed systems.
When you use Server Assistant to install Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating systems, Server Assistant
automaticallycopiestherelevantDellOpenManageServerAdministratorinstallationfilesontotheharddriveandplacesInstall Server Administrator and
Delete Server Administrator Installation Files icons on the desktop.
Before You Begin
Installation Requirements
The following sections describe the managed system general requirements. Operating system-specific installation prerequisites are listed as part of the
installation procedures.
Supported Operating Systems (Minimum Levels)
l Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS, (version 3) x86, Update 6
l Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS, (version 3) for Intel®Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel EM64T) Update 6
l Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS, (version 4) for Intel x86
l Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS, (version 4) for Intel EM64T
l Windows 2000 Server SP4 (includes Server and Advanced Server)
l WindowsServer™2003R2(includesStandardandEnterpriseeditions)
l Windows Server 2003 SP1(Web Edition)
l Windows SBS 2003 SP1 (except IT Assistant)
l Windows Server 2003 x64 R2 (includes Standard and Enterprise Editions)
l Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 (includes Express, Standard, Workgroup, and Enterprise Editions)
l SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (version 9) SP3 for Intel EM64T

Installing Your Operating System
Perform the following steps to determine if an operating system has been installed on your system:
1. Ensurethatthekeyboard,mouse,andmonitorareconnectedtoyoursystem,andturnonyoursystem.
2. Read and accept the software license agreement to continue.
If a message appears and states that bootable drives do not exist or that an operating system was not found, then an operating system has not been
installed on your system. Have your operating system CD available and continue with the next steps.
If an operating system has been preinstalled on your system, it is not necessary to continue with this process. Locate the operating system's Installation
Instructions document that was provided with your system and follow those instructions to complete the installation process.
Perform the following steps to install an operating system on your system:
1. Insert the Dell™PowerEdge™InstallationandServerManagementCD into the CD drive and restart your system.
NOTE: On a system running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system, you will be prompted to install Server
Administrator on first boot after the operating system is installed.
