Running Deployment Scripts Using DTK and

PE
This section provides best practices procedures and scenarios for using the Deployment Toolkit
(DTK) to perform pre-operating system configuration tasks and to install supported operating
systems on supported Dell™ PowerEdge™ systems.
After you have populated the deployment directory structure with all necessary files and carefully
edited the deployment scripts and configurations files, you are ready to begin the final stage of the
deployment process. Before running the deployment, however, you need to create specific deployment
media to facilitate your chosen deployment method. The common deployment scenarios are:
• CD-based local deployment
• CD-based local deployment with networking enabled
• Using a third-party deployment solution framework
For the CD-based deployment methods, you begin by creating and customizing Windows PE for
Dell systems.
Obtaining Windows OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) or Windows PE CD
Contact Microsoft to obtain the latest version of OPK or Windows PE CD.
Copying Tools From OPK or Windows PE CD on a Development System
1
Create and name a directory on your development system hard drive, such as
\WinPE_OPKTools
.
2
Insert the Windows OPK CD or Windows PE CD into your development system CD drive.
3
Copy all of the CD files from the Windows PE directory (
<cd-drive>:\winpe\*.*
) to the
\WinPE_OPKTools
directory.
4
Copy
factory.exe
and
netcfg.exe
from
<cd-drive>:\tools\x86
directory to the
\WinPE_OPKTools
