Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
9 Open the display. 10 Press the power button to ground the system board. CAUTION: To guard against electrical shock, always unplug your computer from the electrical outlet before opening the display. CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.

2 Removing and installing components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Push and remove the battery from the computer.
Installing the Battery 1 Slide the battery into its slot until it clicks into place. 2 Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the SD Card 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Press in on the SD card to release it from the computer. 3 Slide the SD card out of the computer. Installing the SD Card 1 Push the SD card into its slot until it clicks into place. 2 Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer.
4 Remove the display bezel from the computer. Installing the Display Bezel 1 Place the display bezel onto the display assembly. 2 Starting from the top corner, press on the display bezel and work around the entire bezel until it snaps onto the display assembly. 3 Install the battery. 4 Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Display Panel 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
Installing the Display Panel 1 Place the display panel to the display assembly. 2 Align the display panel in its original position. 3 Connect the low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) cable to the display panel and attach the tape. 4 Flip the display panel over and tighten the screws to secure the display panel. 5 Install: a b 6 display bezel battery Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer.

Removing the Keyboard Trim 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Remove the battery. 3 Perform the following steps: a b c Remove the screw that secures the keyboard trim at the back of the computer. Pry up the keyboard trim on its sides and the top edge. Lift upwards and remove the keyboard trim from the computer. Installing the Keyboard Trim 1 Align the keyboard trim to its place.
4 Perform the following steps: a b Slide the keyboard and flip the keyboard over [1] and [2] Disconnect the keyboard cable [1] and [2] and lift the keyboard to remove from the computer [3]. Installing the Keyboard 1 Connect the keyboard cable to the keyboard. 2 Place the keyboard into its place until all the metal tabs fit into their positions. 3 Press down on the keyboard to the left and right side ensuring that all the snaps are fully engaged with the computer.
NOTE: You may need a sharp tool to pry the base cover. Installing the Base Cover 1 Insert the base cover into its slot until it clicks into place. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the base cover to the computer. 3 Install the battery. 4 Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer. Removing the Memory Module 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Remove: a b battery base cover 3 Pry the retention clips away from the memory module until it pops up.
Removing the Hard Drive 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Remove: a b 3 Perform the following steps: a b 4 battery base cover Remove the screws that secure the hard drive in place. Pull the hard drive to remove from its connectors. After removing the hard drive, perform the following steps: a b Remove the screws that secure the hard-drive bracket. Remove the hard-drive bracket from the hard drive.
Removing the Hard-Drive Cage 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Remove: a b c 3 battery base cover hard drive Perform the following steps: a b Remove the screws that secure the hard-drive cage in place. Pull the hard-drive cage to remove from the computer. Installing the Hard-Drive Cage 1 Place the hard-drive cage on its place. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the hard-drive cage.
4 After removing the optical-drive bracket, perform the following steps: a b Remove the screws that secure the optical-drive bracket [1]. Remove the optical-drive bracket from the optical drive [2]. 5 Disengage the optical drive bezel tabs to separate the optical drive bezel from the optical drive. 6 Remove the optical-drive bezel. Installing the Optical Drive 1 Engage the optical-drive bezel tabs to attach the optical-drive bezel to the optical drive. 2 Install the optical-drive bracket.
b c Remove the screw that secures the WLAN card to the computer. Remove the WLAN card from its slot on the system board. Installing the WLAN Card 1 Insert the WLAN card into its connector on the system board. 2 Connect the antenna cables to the respective connectors marked on the WLAN card. 3 Tighten the screw to secure the WLAN card to the computer. 4 Install: a b 5 base cover battery Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your Computer.
Removing the Display Hinge 1 Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2 Remove: a b c d 3 battery base cover keyboard trim keyboard Perform the following steps: a b Remove the screws that secure the display hinge at the front and back of the computer. Lift and remove the display hinge from the computer. Installing the Display Hinge 1 Place the display hinge on the computer. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the display hinge at the front and back of the computer.

Installing the System Board 1 Align the system board into its original position on the computer. 2 Replace and tighten the screws to secure the system board to the computer.

3 System setup System Setup enables you to manage your hardware and specify BIOS level options.
Keys Navigation Enter Selects a value in the selected field (if applicable) or follow the link in the field. Spacebar Expands or collapses a drop‐down list, if applicable. Tab Moves to the next focus area. NOTE: For the standard graphics browser only. Esc Moves to the previous page until you view the main screen. Pressing Esc in the main screen displays a message that prompts you to save any unsaved changes and restarts the system.
Table 2. System Configuration Option Description Integrated NIC Allows you to configure the integrated network controller. The options are: • • • Parallel Port Allows you to configure the parallel port on the docking station. The options are: • • • • Serial Port SATA-0 SATA-1 SATA-2 SATA-3 This field controls whether hard drive errors for integrated drives are reported during system startup. This technology is part of the SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) specification.
Option Description Audio This field enables or disables the integrated audio controller. By default, the Enable Audio option is selected. Keyboard Illumination This field lets you choose the operating mode of the keyboard illumination feature. The keyboard brightness level can be set from 25% to 100% • • • • • Disabled.
Option Description Internal HDD-1 Password Allows you to set or change the system's internal hard-disk drive. NOTE: Successful password changes take effect immediately. Default Setting: Not set Strong Password Allows you to enforce the option to always set strong passwords. Default Setting: Enable Strong Password is not selected. NOTE: If Strong Password is enabled, Admin and System passwords must contain at least one uppercase character, one lowercase character and be at least 8 characters long.

Secure Boot Option Description Secure Boot Enable This option enables or disables the Secure Boot Feature. • • Expert Key Management Disable (default) Enable Allows you to manipulate the security key databases only if the system is in Custom Mode. The Enable Custom Mode option is disabled by default.
Option Description Hyper-Thread Control Allows you to enable or disable the HyperThreading in the processor. Default Setting: Enabled Rapid Start Technology This option might improve the battery life by automatically putting the computer in to a low power state during Sleep, after a user-specified amount of time. Default Setting: Disabled Table 7.
Option Description Advanced Battery Charge Configuration This option enables you to maximize the battery health. By enabling this option, your system uses the standard charging algorithm and other techniques, during the non-work hours to improve the battery health. Disabled (default) Primary Battery Charge Configuration Allows you to select the charging mode for the battery. The options are: • • • • • Adaptive Standard ExpressCharge: This option is enabled by default.
Option Description Fn Key Emulation Allows you to set the option where the key is used to simulate the key feature. Enable Fn Key Emulation (default) Mebx Hotkey Allows you to specify whether the MEBx Hotkey function should be enabled when the system boots Enable MEBx Hotkey (default) Fastboot Allows you to speed up the boot process by bypassing some of the compatibility steps.

7 Click Find it myself. 8 Click BIOS to view the BIOS versions. 9 Identify the latest BIOS file and click Download. 10 Select your preferred download method in the Please select your download method below window, click Download File. The File Download window appears. 11 Click Save to save the file on your computer. 12 Click Run to install the updated BIOS settings on your computer. Follow the instructions on the screen.
To enter the System Setup, press F2 immediately after a power-on or reboot. 1 In the System BIOS or System Setup screen, select System Security and press Enter. The System Security screen is displayed. 2 In the System Security screen, verify that Password Status is Unlocked. 3 Select System Password, alter or delete the existing system password and press Enter or Tab. 4 Select Setup Password, alter or delete the existing setup password and press Enter or Tab.
4 Diagnostics If you experience a problem with your computer, run the ePSA diagnostics before contacting Dell for technical assistance. The purpose of running diagnostics is to test your computer's hardware without requiring additional equipment or risking data loss. If you are unable to fix the problem yourself, service and support personnel can use the diagnostics results to help you solve the problem.
