4.2 Database nodes configuration
This section describes the OS preconfiguration that is applied on the database nodes to
facilitate faster deployment of Oracle Database 12c at the customer site. The configuration
is done based on the best practices of Dell and Oracle.
Database nodes are preconfigured and optimized in the following areas:
Hardware configuration
Oracle Database 12c preinstallation setup
Shared storage volume partitions
Disk permissions setup using UDEV rules
Device-Mapper multipath
Oracle network configuration
To view the list of Dell PowerEdge servers that are supported as the database nodes in the
DISOD solution rack, see the
2.1 Database servers
section.
4.2.1 Hardware configuration
Before any software application is installed, it was ensured that the hardware configuration
is adequate and optimized for Oracle Database environment. This includes setting the
recommended BIOS settings for Oracle Databases, appropriate updated firmware, setting
the recommended RAID configuration, and creating the required partitions for the OS and
for the Oracle Database software. These configuration details are further provided below:
System Profile and memory configuration is set to ‘Performance Optimized’ in the
BIOS settings
Installed firmware versions on all the hardware either matches or is newer than
what was tested with
Each database node has two 1.2 TB HDDs in RAID 1 with a global hot-spare
(1×1.2TB) configured.
Local HDD logical volume partition configuration:
o 60 GB / (root partition for OS)
o 17 GB swap (minimum 16 GB + 1 KB required by Oracle Database)
o Rest allocated to /u01 to be used for Oracle Database software installation
4.2.2 Oracle Database 12c pre-installation setup
The database nodes come preinstalled with OL 6.6 running UEK release 3. To make
integration of Dell hardware and Oracle Database software seamless, the preinstall RPM
for Oracle Database 12c has been customized to eliminate many of the manual tasks
necessary to correctly setup the environment. This utility modifies many settings, including
but not limited to:
Modify kernel parameters and boot settings per Oracle’s recommendations
Add module options as recommended by Oracle
Create special users with specific groups and permissions required for the
management of Oracle Database 12c.
