Managing Virtual Resources
Session Management 9-73
Working with Resource Terminals
The Sessions perspective allows you to work with the resource terminals of the resources in your Template.
Multiple consoles can be open at the same time.
The following topics describe how to work with resource terminals:
Opening a Resource Terminal
Using the Active Terminals View
Using Terminal Emulation Support
Opening a Resource Terminal
The Resource Terminal view displays console input and output to a resource. When the console window is
closed, it loses the contents of your session. The Sessions perspective provides a logging function to allow
you to save your session text.
To open a resource terminal, perform the following steps:
1. In the session editor, right-click a resource, and select Console.
All management interfaces that were defined for the resource are listed.
2. Select the desired console mode (Dedicated, Shared, or Monitor) and connection type, and then click
OK.
Table 9-11 describes the different session modes used with the MS to connect to environment resources.
Table 9-11 Session Modes
Session Mode Description
Dedicated In this type of communication channel, user gets a dedicated communication channel. Each
channel is an exclusive channel from a client to the resource. Commands are sent to the
resource in parallel.
In this mode, only the Telnet and SSH protocols are available.
This mode is also referred to as Session Exclusive Channel Mode.
Shared In shared mode, if there are no consoles opened on the resource port, and a console is
requested by the user, the MS grants the channel to the first request. This user is able to
execute the commands on the resource since they have the channel access.
Subsequent console requests to the same port in the multiplexed mode will be denied by the MS
with an error message. Users can then again request access to acquire the channel.
In this mode, only the Telnet protocol is available.
This mode is also referred to as Session Shared Channel Mode.
Monitor To only monitor the selected port activity, open a console in monitor mode. In this mode, you are
unable to execute commands on resources. For a particular port, open only a single monitor
console.
In this mode, only the Telnet and SSH protocols are available.
This mode is also referred to as Session Monitoring Mode.
Note: Monitoring is done for a resource port and not for a channel; therefore, all
communications to the resource via the MS, on all exclusive and shared channels, is monitored
and made available.
3. If the resource requires a login (SSH mode), supply a username and password for the resource as if you
were using the resource console directly. After login, you can monitor the console output and, in
Dedicated mode, execute commands on the resource.
