Updating Server Component Firmware Using Lifecycle Controller
The Lifecycle Controller is a service available on each of the servers and is
facilitated by iDRAC. The Server Component Update page enables you to
manage the firmware of the components and devices on the servers using the
Lifecycle Controller service.
Before using the Lifecycle Controller based update feature, server firmware
versions must be updated. The modules must be updated in the following
order:
•BIOS
Lifecycle Controller
•iDRAC6
See the "Recommended Module Firmware Versions" section in the CMC
Readme on the Dell Support Web site at support.dell.com/manuals.
Enabling the Lifecycle Controller
If the server does not support the Lifecycle Controller service, the Firmware
Inventory section displays Not Supported.
The Lifecycle Controller service may be disabled on the server and the
Firmware Inventory section displays Lifecycle Controller may not
be enabled.
To enable the Lifecycle Controller service during the server boot process:
1
On the boot console, when prompted with the message,
Press <CTRL-E> for Remote Access Setup within 5
sec
, press
<CTRL-E>
.
The Setup screen is displayed.
2
On the setup screen, enable
System Services
.
To cancel all scheduled jobs that are pending and remove them from the
queue, select Cancel System Services.
To enable the Lifecycle Controller service on the latest generation of servers,
upgrade the existing servers by installing the Unified Server Configurator

servers this upgrade may not be possible.
