Using WOL after A/C Power Disconnect or
with no Operating System (OS) Installed
(Out-of-Box, or D0uninitialized)
Dell’sNICsandLOMscanaccomplishWOLafterasystemhasbeenunplugged
fromallA/Cpower,thenreturnedtoA/Cpower,butnotpoweredon.Thisstate
isknownas“Out‐Of‐BoxWOL”or“D0uninitialized.”Thiscanbeusefulif
serverstobeinstalledpassthroughacentral
processingpointforpreparation,
andthenareinstalledataremotesite.
NICsandLOMsfromDellhaveWOLdisabledbydefault.Havingmorethan
onedeviceenabledforWOLinasystemcanoverloadthe3.3‐voltauxiliary
powersupplyandcauseittomalfunction.Dellstronglyrecommendsthat
only
onedevicebeenabledforWOLpersystem.ToenableOut‐of‐BoxWOL,createa
DOS‐bootablefloppyandcopytheutility,listedintheToolssectionabove,
specifictotheWOLdevicetoitfromtheDellOpenManagementServer

inthisway.
ThestepstoenablingWOLafterA/Cpowerdisconnectorwithnooperating
systemareasfollows:
1. BootthesystemusingtheDOSfloppy,andrun‘IBAUTIL.EXE’,
‘UXDIAG.EXE–tABCD’or‘B57UDIAG.EXE–t
ABCD’.Theseprogramswill
displaythephysicallyinstalledadaptersandthestatusofeachcard’sWOL
setting.UXDIAG.EXEisforNetXtremeIIdevicesandB57UDIAG.EXEisfor
NetXtremeIdevices.
2. ChoosetheNICforWOL,recorditsMACaddress,andnoteitsnumberon
thelefthandsideof
thedisplay.
a. EnableIntelWOLbytyping‘ibautil–nic=X–wole’whereXis
thenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.
b. EnableBroadcomNX1WOLbytyping‘b57udiag–w1–cX’
whereXisthenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.
c. EnableBroadcomNX2
WOLbytyping‘uxdiag–cX–wol1’
whereXisthenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.
