Installation guide

Of course, any soluon with this much cung-edge technology is going to have a fair amount of inherent complexity. This can be
discouraging to someone aempng a new Oracle RAC deployment. However, this paper focuses on the areas where IT sta needs
the most help: conguring the cluster hardware, conguring the shared storage, and navigang through the maze of soware and
patches that need to be installed. By following this guide, IT sta members will be able to successfully deploy Oracle Real Applicaon
Clusters on Dell hardware and Microso Windows Server.
Installing Microso Windows Server OS
Lets begin by introducing some terminology that will be used throughout this paper:
Oracle Enterprise Manager – Management services for the enre Oracle infrastructure. OEM is included with all edions of
Oracle Database.
Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters (RAC) – Allows administrators to run Oracle on two or more systems in a cluster while
concurrently accessing a single shared database. This creates a single database system that spans mulple hardware systems, yet
appears to the
applicaon as a single unied database system, extending high availability and broad scalability to applicaons. Oponal for Enter-
prise Edion, included with Standard Edion.
Database Edions:
Enterprise Edion (9i, 10g; server-side) – For unlimited servers and processors. Opmal scalability and high availability with
Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters opon.
Standard Edion (9i, 10g; server-side) – For servers with up to four processors. Includes Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters at
no extra cost.
Automac Storage Management (ASM) – Manages disk striping and mirroring within Oracle Database 10g. Included with all
edions of Oracle Database.
Data Guard – Allows administrators to set up and maintain a standby copy of their producon database to more quickly recover
and maintain connuous database service, even in the event of a disaster. Available with Oracle Database Enterprise or Personal
Edions.
Flashback Query – Allows administrators or users to query any data at some point-inme in the past and can be used to view and
reconstruct lost data that may have been deleted or changed by accident. Included with all edions of Oracle 9i Database and Oracle
Database 10g.
