Installation guide
Of course, any soluon with this much cung-edge technology is going to have a fair amount of inherent complexity. This can be
discouraging to someone aempng a new Oracle RAC deployment. However, this paper focuses on the areas where IT sta needs
the most help: conguring the cluster hardware, conguring the shared storage, and navigang through the maze of soware and
patches that need to be installed. By following this guide, IT sta members will be able to successfully deploy Oracle Real Applicaon
Clusters on Dell hardware and Microso Windows Server.
Installing Microso Windows Server OS
Let’s begin by introducing some terminology that will be used throughout this paper:
Oracle Enterprise Manager – Management services for the enre Oracle infrastructure. OEM is included with all edions of
Oracle Database.
Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters (RAC) – Allows administrators to run Oracle on two or more systems in a cluster while
concurrently accessing a single shared database. This creates a single database system that spans mulple hardware systems, yet
appears to the
applicaon as a single unied database system, extending high availability and broad scalability to applicaons. Oponal for Enter-
prise Edion, included with Standard Edion.
Database Edions:
Enterprise Edion (9i, 10g; server-side) – For unlimited servers and processors. Opmal scalability and high availability with
Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters opon.
Standard Edion (9i, 10g; server-side) – For servers with up to four processors. Includes Oracle Real Applicaon Clusters at
no extra cost.
Automac Storage Management (ASM) – Manages disk striping and mirroring within Oracle Database 10g. Included with all
edions of Oracle Database.
Data Guard – Allows administrators to set up and maintain a standby copy of their producon database to more quickly recover
and maintain connuous database service, even in the event of a disaster. Available with Oracle Database Enterprise or Personal
Edions.
Flashback Query – Allows administrators or users to query any data at some point-inme in the past and can be used to view and
reconstruct lost data that may have been deleted or changed by accident. Included with all edions of Oracle 9i Database and Oracle
Database 10g.
