Avoiding Impeller Freeze‐Up
Impellerfreeze‐upoccurswhensnowandiceremainintheimpellerhousingaer thejobisfinished.
Theremainingsnowandicemeltsparallyan donlytemporarilyduetoresidualheatinthesnow
blower.Theremainingmixturere‐freezesandessenally“welds”theimpellertotheimpellerhousing
andpreventsrotaonoftheimpeller.
Snowblowersareespeciallysuscepbletofreeze‐upimmediatelyaerusewhenthemachineis
storedoutsideorinanun‐heatedgaragewherethetemperatureisbelowfreezing.
Residualsnowinthedischargechuteandimpeller
housingmeltsintheheatoftheengineandfricon
fromotherrotangcomponents.Themelng
residualdripsandflowstotheboomoftheimpeller
housingwhichisthefurthestpointfromaheat
source.Duringverycoldcondions,theresidual
cannotescapethroughthedrainholebeforeit
freezesintheimpellerhousingandseizesthe
impeller.Theremainingsnowandicepoolsinthe
boomaerthedrainhole,and connuestobuildup
icearoundthecomponents.Thedrainholeislocated
atthelowestpointonthebackoftheimpeller
Runtheauger/impellerforafewminutesaersnowblower
usetoclearanyresidualsnow.
Aershungoffthesnowblower,dustoffanyremaining
snow.
Manuallyspintheimpellersothatnoneofthebladespoint
straightdown.
Placeaheat‐source(anincandescentlightbulbworkswell)
inthehousing(seephotoright).
Tarpthesnowblowertoretaintheheatandtokeep
addionalsnowoffthemachine.Usecauonwhencovering
ahotsnowblower.Themufflercanmeltcoversorcatch
fire.Nevercoverasnowblowerimmediatelyaer
shutdown.
Iftheimpellerisfrozenup
whentheimpeller/collectorhandleisengaged,thebeltswillbogdownthe
engineandthebeltswillbegintoburnontheenginepulleysincethey cannotmove,orashearpincould
fail.
Toavoidthis, werecommendmanuallyspinningtheimpellerbeforestarngthesnow
blowertoensureit
movesfreely.Ifalreadyfrozen,ahairdryerwillusuallycleartheicequickly.
